SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,951, dated April 30, 1901.
Application filed August 21, 1900. Serial No. 27,566. (N 0 model- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MERRIOK, of Johnstown,in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement inElectric Railway-Motors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in electric railwaymotors, and is designed to provide a sectional field-magnet frame for motors of this class with means for facilitating the connection and separation of its sections and also for facilitating the connection of the frame to a motor suspension-bar; also, to provide simple and efficient means for securing in place the armature-shaft bearings and lubricating the same. I attain these objects by the novel construction and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, referen ce being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a railwaymotor embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a detail sectional view showing one of the arn1ature-shaft bearings; Fig. 3, an end View of the bearing-sleeve. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail fragmentary views showing one of the hinge connections.
In the drawings the letter A designates the upper frame-section of the motor, having the sleeving extensions a, and B the lower framesection. b designates removable bolts which secure said sections together.
C is a nose lug or projection on the upper section A, shaped to receive a suspension-bar D, to which the motor is secured by a bolt E. To seat this bolt, the lug O is provided with a recess 0, open at one side, as at c, to permit the bolt to be put in place or removed by a lateral movement thereof. By the provision of this recess for the bolt I avoid cutting through the frame of the motor and also permit said bolt to be put in place or removed by a lateral movement thereof.
F is a lug on the frame-section A, which is formed with a vertical aperture to receive a hook-bolt G, whose hook portion loosely engages a loop G, formed on or secured to the frame-section B. The upper end of said bolt is secured by a nut g, by the manipulation of which the two framesections may be drawn into close contact with each other.
H designates one of the bearing-sleeves for the armature-shz-ifr, having a liner h of Babbitt metal. Said sleeve is formed with a flange h at its inner end portion, said flange extending around substantially one-half the periphery of the sleeve and engaging the shoulder 72. of the upper frame-section to prevent outward displacement of said sleeve. The lower frame-section is formed with an internal rib or flangej, whose ends abut in a circular direction the ends of the flange h, thereby securely holding the sleeve I-I against any tendency to rotate.
I designates an oil-guard which is secured in place by a locking device i of the character described in the patent to A. J. Gairing, No. 654,391, dated July 24, 1900.
K is a ring or hoop which engages the projecting end of the sleeve H, with a projecting stud K engaging a lug is on the upper framesection and a second stud K engaging a lug 70 on the lower frame-section. The stud K is secured by a pin or cotter Z and the stud K bya nut Z. By removing the bolts Z) and the nuts '1 (one at each end of the motor) the lower frame-section may be swung downwardly on its hinges, leaving the armature in the upper frame-section, or by removing the key or cotter Z the armature may be retained in the lower frame-section. The end portions of the frame are formed with chambered projections P, which form lubricantreservoirs extending both above and below the armature-shaft bearings, the Babbitt linings being partially cut away, as shown at p, to give the lubricant access to the journal. In the bottom of each of said reservoirs is a removable cleaning-plug P, and at the top is a hinged door P The sleeve-bearings a, together with the caps to therefor, are provided with similar Inbricant-reservoirs R.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. In an electric motor of the class described, a field-magnet frame formed in two horizontallydivided sections and constructed for sleeving connection to a car-axle, the upper of said sections having nose lugs or projections formed with bolt-seats and laterally open slots leading into the said seats.
2. An electric railway-motor, having its frame formed with nose-lugs for engagement with a supporting-bar, said lugs having boltseats therein, and laterally open slots leading to the said seats.
3. In an electric railway-motor of the class described,the construction of upper and lower frame-sections, lugs formed on the upper sections, bolts threaded into said lugs and having depending open hooks, straps or loops on the lower section engaged by said hooks, and adjusting-nuts on the upper projecting ends of the said bolts.
4:. In a railway-motor of the class described, the field-magnet frame constructed in upper and lower sections, armature-shaft bearings seated partially in each section, adjustable hinges connecting said sections at one edge, removable bolts connecting said sections at the ends, and rings or straps engaging the projecting ends of the said shaft-bearings and removably secured to both upper and lower sections.
5. In a railway-motor of the class described, the combination with a field-magnet frame having openings at its ends, of shaft-bearing sleeves seated in said openings and having each a segmental flange at its inner end which engages the frame to prevent endwise out- Ward movement of the sleeve and also rotary movement thereof.
6. In a railway-1n otor of the class described, the combination with a field-magnet frame having openings at its ends, of shaft-bearing sleeves seated in said openings, and having each a seinicircumferential flange at its inner end engaging a shoulder on the frame to prevent endWise displacement of the sleeve, and a rib or projection on the frame engaging the ends of said flange to prevent rotary movement of the sleeve.
7. In a railway-mot orof the class described, the combination with a field-magnet frame formed in separable upper and lower sections and having openings atits ends, of shaft-bearing sleeves seated in the said openings and projecting therefrom,said sleeves having each a segmental flange at its inner end which ongages the frame to prevent endwise outward movement of the sleeve and also rotary movement thereof, and means for securing said sleeve to both of said sections or to either section alone.
