Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. COX, JR., OF RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
NEST-EGG.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Lettr Patent NO. 671,471, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed October 10, 1900. Serial No. 32,644. (No model.)
To all whom i1) may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DAVID H. COX, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Nest- Egg, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a nest-egg; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device of this character of solid practically non porous nature having an opening or cavityv therein extending to the exterior for the reception of a suitable vehicle or absorbent material Which is saturated with a disinfectant or substance obnoxious or vitally fatal to the life of lice, mites, or other vermin or parasites which usually infest nests during laying or setting of a hen, and thereby relieve the latter of the Wellknown inconvenience and ofttimes dangerous results arising from the presence of said pests.
The invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of the several parts, Which will be more fully hereinafter described an claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nest-egg embodying the features of Y the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both views. The numeral l Adesignates a body having the contour of an ordinary hens egg, of any1 suitable material, preferably of a nature prac- Tically non-porous and unbreakable, and in the use of some kinds of materials it Will be necessary to treat the outer surface so as to.
resemble the outer surface of a natural egg. It is also intended to use a material that can be readily cleansed, of a cheap and durable nature. A longitudinal cavity 2 is formed in the body and opens out exteriorly at the center of the butt-end 3, and therein is placed a filling 4, of absorbent cotton or like material, Which is saturated With carbolic acid, oil of sassafras, or other substance having an obnoxious or destroying elfect on lice, mites, and the like, and the vapor thereof is given forth through the opening in the butt end 3 and permeates the nest, as Well as the feathers of the fowl. The cavity 2'is provided With an outlet through the point end 5 of the body l by means of a longitudinal bore 6 of less diameter extending to the inner terminal of saidpcavity. The opening of the cavity through the butt-end of the egg is of the same diameter as the cavity itself, so that the filling 4 can be easilyinserted and removed and also permit the vapors of the saturating material or disinfectant to have free and unretarded exit or passage from the cavity.
It will be observed that no liquids are employed that will have a tendency to exude or ooze out from the egg with obvious uncleanly and frequently injurious result to the fowl. It has frequently occurred in the use of the devices of this character that a hen has been so annoyed by an exudation of the liquids contained in the eggs and the painful result from contact with certain acids used as to cause her to leave or break up the nest. Furthermore, in the complex structures heretofore employed the operation desired has frequently been obstructed by theintricate parts failing to perform'their intended functions, and the cost of the same has been excessive. The simple form of the present device over comes these disadvantages and a'device is provided having an effective operation. The longitudinal bore 6 'Will also afford means for permitting the insertion of a suitable implement to shove the filling out from the cavity 2 in the event that said filling becomes stuck or jammed and immovable from the outletopening of said cavity.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A nest-egg having a longitudinally-extending central cavity opening out of the buttend thereof, said cavity having a longitudinal central bore of less diameter fully communicating with and extending from the inner terminal of the same to' and opening through the point end of the egg, the body of the egg between the said cavity and bore and the surface of the same being solid and imperforate, and a saturated absorbent filling removably mounted in the cavity.
` In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto afxed my signature in the presence of twoY Witnesses.
' DAVID H. COX, JR.
