Description

Parent trio,
OI-IARLES R. MORGAN, OF AKRON, OHIO.
OIL WASHER AND FILTER.
$PEGIFIGATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 671,054, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed January 14, 1901. Serial No. 43,192. kNo model.)
To all whom it may-concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residingatAkron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oil Washers and Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of oil-purifiers especially adapted to receive lubricating-oil which has wasted from the wearing parts of machinery charged with metallic particles and other dirt incident to its normal use and strains, washes, and purifies it, so that it may be restored as nearly as may be to its original state.
The object of my invention is to produce a new and improved device of the general class named that will without disparagement of those antedatiug it be peculiarly elfective for accomplishing its general purpose, and shall, in addition thereto, afford new andimproved means for comminuting the oil and distributing the particles in the loath to permit of their thorough washing, and also render the parts of the apparatus readily accessible for the purpose of cleansing or repairs.
To the aforesaid object my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a central section of my improved filter, 1 is a cylindrical body of sheet metal adapted to rest on a floor or other suitable support, having interposed above the base a conical bottom 2, from the under center of which a pipe 3 extends to one side, controlled by a cock 4:.
Supported in the body 1, by any suitable or preferred means, are grates or equivalent devices 5 6, between which is a filtering substance 7, of cotton-waste or like material.
Above the grate 5, at any approved height, is a draw-off cock 8, through which the purified oil may be removed, and at the side of the body 1 is a levelgage 9 of the ordinary pattern to show the height of the oil:
At one side and outside of the body 1 is a to telescope the body 1.
pipe 10, that extends to near the bottom of the body, thence through and across it, and terminates in and is controlled by a cook 11.
The upper end of the pipe 10 is provided with a union 12, by which it is detachably connectedwith a pipe 13, cont-rolled by a cock 14c and hereinafter to be described. On the pipe 10 and substantially centrally of the body 1 is attached a device for spreading and comminuting, the oil, wh-ichconsists of a hollow conicalshell 15, internally connected with the pipe 10 and having at its upper edge minute openings through which the oil may escape.
pipe 13, heretofore mentioned. Detachably interposed in this filter at suitable intervals is a series of screens 18, 19, and 20, although it is not essential that three be used, as a less number may serve, and constructed of wirenetting or analogous material and resting on supports 21, that may consist of a number of studs, as shown, or an annular flange. Below these screens and extending across the top of thebottom 17 is the final strainer 22, of flannel or felt.
In operation the tank 1 is filled with water to the grate 6, and the oil to be purified is poured into the shell 25 and descends through the successive screens -18 19 20 and strainer .22 into the pipe 13 and 10, and ascending into the spreading device 15 through minute openings, in the upper edge of which it rises in minute globules through the water, by which it is washed, and thence passes through the filter 7, where any remaining impurities held in suspension are removed, allowing the pnrified oil to accumulate above the filter 7, whence it is drawn off as desired through the cock 8. If at any time it is noticed that the oil is rising so high in the tank 1 as to indicate danger of its escaping over the edge of the tank, the cook 14 can be turned until by removal of purified oil the danger is past.
Whenever it is desired to clean the various parts, the shell 23 is lifted off, the union 12 permitting this operation, when all the internal parts are readily reached to clean, remove, and renew, as is necessary.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an oil filter and Washer, the combination with a tank to retain Water, and a cock to remove it, and a filter supported between disks of wire-netting intermediate of said tank, and a draw-off cock above said filter, of a pipe extending across said tank near its bottom having a draw-off cock outside of said tank, and a hollow conical shell supported on and internally connected with said pipe, and having minute openings around its top, and means for conveying oil to be Washed into said pipe, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an oil filter and Washer the combination with a tank to retain water and a cook to remove it, a filter supported intermediate of said tank, a draw-olf cock above said filter, and a pipe extending across said tank near the bottom having a draw-off cock at one end outside the tank and a hollow conical shell supported on and internally connected with said pipe and having minute openings around the top, of a superimposed shell detachably resting on said tank, having a number of filtering-disks arranged at intervals therein, and a bottom having a discharge-pipe leading to the tank-pipe, provided with a cock and a union by which it may be detachably connected with said pipe, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
V CHARLES R. MORGAN.
