UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
BOERT PPEjR; @rim-.EDOre-H101" f, noname-HORSErrRicYCL. f
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. erheen, eared Apri12,ieoi.
Application filed-April-IO, 1900.` Serial o. y121281." (No model.)
To 0,17/ 7071/0717, it iii/my con/cern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PIPER, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Horse Tricycles;V and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will'enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the ligures of reference marked tl1ereon,Which form part of this specification.
My invention has reference to a rocking. horse tricycle, and has .for its object to provide an eflicient andnovel exercisingdevice for children.
As an exerciser the ordinary velocipede is an excellent device for children, but is soon discarded. by them for Want of novelty.
My invention is novel to an extent to insure its use by the young for an extended period.
I further provide in carrying out my invention a means whereby my device may be used `as an indoor rocking-horse when the condition of the Weather will prevent its use out of doors. y
I further provide certain novel features of construction and the parts `and combination of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed. Y
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of. my invention, the body of the horse `being cutaway to disclose the mechanical arrangement thereof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, a portion ofthe horse and also of the frame being cut aWayFl-to more plainly disclose my in vention. The position of thesprocket-chaiu is shown in dotted lines.
My invention consists-of the `figure of .the
horse l, constructed of any suitable material,
vbut preferably of Wood, and is hollcvred out on the interior at 2 to permit the frame -to enter. Extending entirely through the figure and joining the interior portion 2 are pas-` sages 4 and 5, respectively. Attached to the body of the figure l are angle-plates 6 and 7, secured pivotally to a cross-head 8, integral Frame-3 is formed of tubing andis mounted upon wheels 9 and 10, se-
l cured upon the rear axle 11, and the wheel l2 bly secured in the steering-head l5, through which the fork-stem 16 extends. Rigidly secured to the fork-stem 16 is the annular member 17, having a'n extended lug 181, to which links l!) are attached in hinged relation. 20 isa handle-bar stem hinged to links 10 at- 21 and which extends through passage 5. 22 is a plate secu red `to the neck of the Iig'- ure and. has aV central perforation through which the handle-bar stem Opasses.
23 is a pin secured in the haudle-barste'm, having the sides thereof extended to rest upon the plate 22 to hold the handle-bar propel' in `position above'the neck. By this construction the handle-bar moves up and down with the figure. i
2L is an ordinary crank-hanger in which the crank-axleis journaled.
25 is a crank extending,r from the crankaxle, vto which the sprocket-wheel 20 is also secured.
1 27 represents .pedal-cranks, and 28 pedals employed to impart motion` to the sprocketwheel 26 and crank 25.
29 is a sprocket-'chain to transmit motion from the sprocket-wheel 26 to the sprocket 30, keyed to the axle Il. -r
3l is a connecting-rod, one end' thereof 32 being secured to ,the crank 25 and the other end 33 hinged to a plate 3st', securedto' the figure.
fjournaiedin the foi-k ir." v-irorkiI-fis revoiu- The saddle 35 is attached to the figure at apoint just above the cross-head 3.
Y lFrom the foregoing description the operation will be apparent. Vhen motion is imparted to the device through the mediu n1' of the pedals, pedal-cranks, sprocket-wheels, and connecting'sprocket-chain, theitricycle will pass over the ground and the figure of the horse will rock in 4`life-like manner. By using' a large driving-sprocket and. a small sprocket, as I have shown, the figure will rock but once while the Wheels make a number of revolutions. When it is desired to 'use the. device as an indoor rocking-horse,the drivingchain is removed from the machine, lwhich will permit the horse to rock without imparting l motion to the Wheels.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
isv In a rocking-horse Atricycle, the figure-body IOO mounted upon the frame, the revoluble rear axle journaled in said frame, Wheels thereon /adapted to revolve therewith, a. driven sprocket keyed upon said rear axle, a driv` 5 ing-axle revolubly mounted in the frame, and
the figure-body, asteering-fork'provided with Y a steering-wheel, mounted in the. forward part of the cfreine, a. handle-bar having a stem extending through a perforation in the forward part of the figure-body, and links connecting the lower end of the handle-bar stein with the upper end of the steering-fork, all cornbined to operate in the manner specied.
.In testimony that I claim the lforegoing as myvown I alix ny signature in presence of 2o two'witnessea f ROBERT PIPER.
