To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV BERNHARD PETSOHE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the city and county of Phi1adelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improveblowing engines, and has for its object to pro vide efiicient means for actuating and regulating the throw of the admission-valves in such engines.
The nature of my improvement will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a blowingengine provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a diagrammatic drawing showing the manner in which my device operates.
A indicates the framing of the engine; B, the steam-cylinder, the upper portion being cut away to provide for showing the other parts of the engine on a larger scale.
C is the main shaft of the engine, driven from the steam-cylinder in any usual and convenient manner.
E is the compressing-cylinder of the engine, E E indicating the receivers, into which the delivery-valves open at the opposite ends of the cylinder.
G G indicate the valve-stems connected with the admission-valves of the engine. As shown, they have attached to their outer ends cam-slotted slides G, moving in guideways, (indicated at G G G indicate bell-crank levers pivoted on the guideways G having at one end camrollers 9 which move in the slot-cams, and having their other ends connected to a reciprocating rod G which rod connects through a pivoted lever G with another reciprocating rod G", which at its lower end is connected at Q with a swinging link Q one end of which is pivotally connected with an adj ustable slide Q, moving in a guideway Q and adjustable by means of a set-screw Q. The other end of the swinging link Q is pivotally connected at g with another swinging link Q which link is also pivotally connected with an arm P extending out from an eccentricring P which ring extends around an eccentric P, secured to the shaft 0, and has on its opposite side another arm P, which arm is pivotally connected at P in the slide P making up a familiar link-motion, and, as shown, the arm P is also connected by a link 0 with a slide 0, moving in a guideway N and having attached to it a rod 0 which, as described in my former application, Serial No. 646,636, filed July 31,1897, can be conveniently used for actuating the valves of the steam cylinder. This, however, forms no part of my present invention, which is solely concerned with the actuation of the air-admission valves irrespective of the means used for actuating the steam-valves, my air-admissionvalveactuating mechanism in its combination with the steam-valve-actuating mechanism being claimed in my said former application, of which the present case is a division.
While I have shown the rod Gr connected to link Q near its connection with slide Q, it will be obvious that the kind of motion desired will be secured by connecting rod G with any intermediate point on either of the links Q or Q, the section of the point of attachment being a mere matter of mechanical skill, depending on the amount of motion desired.
In the diagram Fig. 2 I have shown the effect of three dififerent adjustments of the slide Q, from which it will readily be seen how said adjustments will necessarily afiect the movement of the admission-valves, and I will further say that the nature of the connecting mechanism by which the movement of the swinging links is communicated to the valves can be varied without departure from my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an air-compressing engine the combination with a positively-driven eccentric P and a link P P actuated thereby of a slide P in which the arm P of the link is pivoted, a slide Q arranged to be adjusted toward and away from the link P P a pair of links Q Q pivotally connected together and connect- IO ed also as shown with the arm P of the link P P and with the slide Q and a valve-actuating connection extending from an intermediate point on said links to the air-admission valve mechanism of the compressingcylinder.
