NlTED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
WILLIAM F. MANGELS, OF CONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM S. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
MERRY-GO-ROUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,842, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed June 6,1900.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I,W1LLIAM F. MANGELS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, (Coney Island, borough of Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Merry-Go-Round, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to merry-go-rounds having crank-shafts for imparting movement to the seats; and the object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in the construction of merry-go-rounds, whereby the driving-gear for the crank-shafts is completely relieved of the weight of the revoluble frame, and consequently undue strain is avoided and the frame is supported independently of the gearing to insure an easy running of the machine with comparatively little power.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement with the seats and other ordinary parts of the merry-go-round omitted. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the central portion of the device shown in Fig. l and with part of the fixed gear broken out, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
The improved merry-go-round is provided with a suitable central post A, on which is fastened a support B, having an annular ballhearing 0 for engagement with the under side of a frame D, mounted to turn loosely on said post as a center, said frame D being formed of suitable radially-extending beams preferably made in sections fastened together, the inner sections'of the beams being connected with each other by suitable rings, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1, the outer sections being connected with each other by con- Serlal No. 19,246. (No model.)
necting beams or braces, also fully shown in Fig. 1. The frame D is provided with the usual pin or lantern Wheel E, connected with the power for rotating the frame in the usual manner.
On the revoluble frame D are journaled crank-shafts F, having the usual cranks F at or near their outer ends for connection with horses or other seats mounted to rock on said frame and receiving a rocking motion from the crank-arms during the time the frame D is turned around. The crank-shafts F are arranged in pairs, and each pair is provided with gear-wheels G in mesh with opposite sides of a gear-wheel G, secured on a shaft G journaled on the frame D between the shafts F of a pair of shafts, as will be readilyunderstood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. On the inner end of each shaft G is secured a pinion G in mesh with a bevel gearwheel G secured to the center post A above the frame D, as is plainlyillustrated in Fig. 2. Now it is eXident that as the several pinions G are in mesh with the fixed gear-wheel G a rotary motion is simultaneously given to all the shafts G when the frame D is turned, and the rotary motion given to each shaft G is transmitted by its gear-wheel G to the gearwheels G on a pair of crank-shafts F, and consequently the desired rocking motion is given to the horses or other seats during the time the frame D is revolved.
By having the bearing for the frame D completely independent of the gearing for driving the crank-shafts F it is evident that said gearing is completely relieved of all strain incident to the weight of the frame, and consequently it requires comparatively little power to rotate the frame D by the motor used for the purpose. Furthermore, all danger of the gear-wheels binding is completely avoided whether the. frame is loaded to a greater or less extent.
It is understood that the pairs of gearwheels G in mesh with opposite sides of the gear-wheels G form, with the latter and the pinion G a train of gear-wheels for rotating the crank-shafts from the fixed gear-wheel G when the frame D is rotated.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A merry-g0-r0nnd, comprising a central 5 post, an annular bearing secured to said post, a frame mounted to turn on said bearing, a gear-wheel fixed to the post above the frame, crank-shafts arranged in pairs on the frame,
a pinion-shaft arranged between each two of '10 a pair of shafts and having driving connection therewith, and a pinion on each pinionshaft meshing with said gear-Wheel, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. MANGELS.
