McDOWELL DARROW, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 66,952, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR HEATING TIRES.
T0 ALI. WHOM IT MAYQCONCERN':
Be it known that I, McDOWELnDARROW, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and use ful improvement in Tire-Heaters; andI do hereby declare that the-follow. ing is a full and exact-description thereof, reference bei'ng had 'to the accompanying drawings, mahing par of this specification. Y I I v I Figure l is a plan oi my improved heaterfi th a portion of the cover broken away to snow the interio arrangement.
Figure 2 is an elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a-vertieal section.' i
. Like letters of referenceindie'ate corresponding parts in all the figures.
' t This arrangement is intended for heating tires to'apply to wheels. The invention consists in an annular heating-chamber, formed in compartments.whose'partitions extend pa'rz way up, the eiiect being to equalize the burning of the fuel around the tire,b u t atthe' same time allow the necessary draught; and furthermore, in connection therewith, the employment of'registers o'ver thecompartmcnts, for the admission of air to further equalize the combustion and the heating o f the tire. i 5 I As represented in the drawings, A is an annular chamber of suflicicnt size to receive ordinary tires of different diameters; -and B is a removable cover that fits closely over it. The draught is admitted through doorsat a, and discharges through smoke pipcat b. The interior of the chamber isdivided into a series of compartments, '0 c, by partitions d dywhieh, however, extend but part way up, and serve to support the tire thereonns it is being heated. Over'the compartments is a series of registers, ff, in the cover. I -The charcoal'or other fuel is placed in the compartments, around the tire, and ignited. Were it not for the compartments the fire would sweep around from the doors a and-burn unequally. The partitions, extending only part way up the height of the chambenallow the necessary passage for the draught over them, but at the same time obstruct the passage of the fire, and thus produces an equality in the combustion that could not otherwise be obtained. g
The employment of the registersffin the cover also serves to equalize the-combustion by allowing cold air to enter at any desired point, and thereby deaden the burning at that point. They also serve to equalize the heat of the tire by'equalizing the combustion. They further serve as peen holes to determine the state of thetire. at any time.
What .I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tire-heater, having compartments 0 c, and registersff, and which is otherwise constructed and arranged as described, and which operates as herein set forth. I I
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MCDOWELL ,DARROW.
