jBe .it known that I, FREDERICKI EComiELL, 'Jr.,'ot"the'oity, county, and State ofv New York, have invented certain new Yand useful Improvements in Brick Machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear,a'nd .exact description of th'e same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. i
'lhe'bbjeet-of this my invention is- First. To provide moulds that may be-arranged in a. nest or nollow circle, so that the same,when placed in a horizontal position, may be filled by the unpressecl material flowing into the empty' mould from the upper side, after which the compression is eifected by a plunger moved horizontally inwards by any snitablepowei'.
Second. Providing a ned-plate, npon`whioh that portion ofthe nest containing the mould in which pressure is to be exerted may rest, and furnishing said bed-plate with a roller to support the back ot' the mould, and with studs extending upwards at either side of the mouth of thc mould, and at its outer edge, and firmly connected above said nest of moulds to the axis of the aforesaid roller, and jointing to said studs a hanging jaw with a suitable face to cover the upper open side ci the mould, and with lugs extending downward and back of said studs, so that'theilnlcrnn: points, by which pressure is exerted through the plunger, maybe located in said lugs, and opposite to and in a horizontal line withthe centre of the plunger, so that the greater the pressure on the faceof the plunger, the greater will he the pressure of the face of the jaw'upon the top of the mould,

Being closed during the operation o1" lling the mould, it carries the material in the mould around untilthe notch s in its end, engaging with thestop-pin r in the standardTfas shown in hg. 4,' allows the nest of moulds to move forward, and the gate is held stationary.l The jaw E is constructed of cast uinetal,l and is firmly attached to 'the standards T T by the bolt F. When the lugs G G are drawn upon at the fulcru'm point g g, the face e rests firmly on top of the mould.- and closes the upper side, through which the clay is introduced. The plunger L restsloosely between the standards T T, and may be operated by anysuitable power which may-have its fulcrum point attached to the lugs Gr Gr at the points g g. The axis C is furnished with a-crosshead,-D., which is firmly secured to the standards T T by the bolts fmI m passing over the nest of moulds and the face of the jaw E.
The mould-block M is furnished with a pin, n, on its upper and inner edge, to enable any proper mechanism to return it to its rst'position after moving outward, as. shown ing. 3.
The operation'of my improved brick machinery is'as follows: The clay or material tobe pressed into a brick or block having been filled into the mould'oy any suitable machinery, which {illing process may be going on in some-*one of the moulds in the positions 4, 5, or 6, as shown in red lines, all the time, thegate P being closed, as shown in g. 7, in case said gate be used, which, however, is not necessary, as the material may be retained in themoulds by other means, the nest of moulds is then moved forward, so that a illed mouldis brought opposite to the plunger Lf 1n order to do this, the stoppin 'fr is withdrawn before the nest begins to move, and is held by any proper mechanical device until the gate P, to be opened, comes opposite, when it is allowed to engage with the notch s, andthe mould moving` forward, the gate is retained andl the mouth of the mould is left open to receive the plunger L, as shown in iig. 4. immediately before the plunger begins to move, thc index-bar H is'rapidly moved forward in its groove 7L, so that its pointed end enters and passes through the notch v in thc flange i, (shown in iig. 8,) and by this device the said notch c being so adjusted (iig. 7) that when the index. H' has passed through it, the mould mouth above is in. exact position to receive the plunger L, any inequality in the power moving the nest of moulds is rectiied. soon asithe mould is in position, the plunger L is moved forward by a lever, 7,-as shown in red lines in figs.. 1 and 2, or by any other propermechanieal contrivance for that purpose having the fulcrum. points at g' g. Theace e of the jaw E is, by this means, drawn firmly down npo'n the ,upper side of the mould, as shown in iig. Il, and the force with which it presses down'is in exact proportion to the resistance tothe entrance et the plunger into the mould. .The brick or block having been pressed-and the plunger having been withdrawn and taken the position shown in fig. 1 by blue lines, the 'aw E is allowed vto rise 'oil' the mould, as shown als-odin blue lines, leaving the'nest free to move forward until another filled mould is presented for the action or" the plunger, and during the next pressure the brick that has been formed ismoved ont bythe mould-block lw being pushed outward by any proper application of power, as shown i'nligr'-and the said block, after the brick is discharged, is returned to its original place by means of power applied to the pin n, and is ready to receive another charger The mould-block M, on the edge f f', is bevellcd inwards, K K are bevelled inwards' on their upper faces, as shown in idg. 6 at R, so that any clay thatmay have aceumulatedwill be 'discharged inwards, so as to leave a clear surface to pass under the face e of the `iaw E. t
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1Eatent, is
1..A mould, for forming bricks or blocks, open ou two of its contiguous sides. v
. 2. The movable mould-block M,.with its outer side f tapered inwards in va direction opposite to its motion so that the instant it starts the pressure on' the end oithe brick is removed. The fixed blocks' when discharging a finished brick, and retained in position by the iixed block K, having` a corresponding taper vat f', and by ribs jj, attached to the fixed blocks K K. y 3. The gate 1)01 its equivalents, provided with thedove-tail slip p, moving in the dove-tail groove p', in the side of the {ix-ed block- K, as and'for the purposes hereinbefore described. l
4. AThe bed-plate A, standards T T, spindle C, supportingroller B, crosshead D, bolts m in, groove vto receive the index-'bar H, and groove c to receive the flange z', as and for the purposes .hereinbefore described.
5. The indou-bar H, with a suitably bevelled end, moving inproper guides to engage with thenotch v in the flange z', or with any other mechanical device, in combination with a movable table or nest of mou-lds, as and for the purposes herenbefore described. v
