APPARATUS FOR PERFORATING PHOTOGRAPHIC BANDS OF FILM. 
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,118, dated January 29, 1901. 
Application filed July 18, 1900. 
T0 all whom, it may concern: 
 Be it known that I, EUGENE LOUIS DOYEN, doctor of medicine, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 6 Rue Puccini, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Perforating Photographic Bands of Film, of which the following is a specification. 
 This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in apparatus for perforating photographic bands of film; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. 
 In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side elevation; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the entablature-plate of the frame. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the base of the apparatus, showing the guideway and catch for drawing the film forward. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the guard to prevent the catch from engaging in the opening for the perforating-tool. Fig. 5 is a top plan of the base broken away at each end and a portion of the slide carrying the catch and the guard to prevent the catch from engaging in the opening for the perforating-tool. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the base. 
 The apparatus is mounted upon a suitable base provided with a slotted guideway A, through which the band of film passes in the direction of the arrows B. 
 The apparatus is operated by means of a toothed wheel 0, driven by an electric motor or any other suitable gear or directly by a crank. 
 The toothed wheel 0 engages with and drives two toothed wheels which are of the same diameter, but larger than the wheel 0, in order to reduce the speed received from the electric motor. One of these wheels D and E drives an eccentric F and the other the crank-disk G and the cam H. The eccentric F causes to alternately rise and fall the Serial No. 24,095- (No model.) 
frame K L M, carrying the tool for making the perforations in the film. The frame is guided, for example, by four vertical rods 0 P Q R, mounted on the guideway A, and a fifth rod S, attached to the frame and working in an orifice T in the center of the entablature-plate U, which unites the upper ends of the aforesaid four rods 0 P Q R and prevents any displacement of the tool N. 
 The toothed wheel E has mounted on its axle a crank-disk G and a cam H. The said crank-disk G drives a rod V, which is adjustably connected toward one of the ends of a horizontal slide X by a regulating-screw Y. The said slide Xis provided at its other end with a catch Z, having at its point 1 a claw 2. The cam H depresses one arm of a lever 3 when the catch Z is at the end of its stroke, the said lever 3 being arranged longitudinally, Fig. 1, or at right angles, Fig. 3, to the guideway. When the said arm 3 of the lever is depressed, the lever turns on its fulcrum 4, and the other arm 5 of the said lever raises at the point  6 the catch Z and removes it from the film. The said catch does not return to its original position until it is to take into the perforation which has just been pierced by the tool. 
 The actions of the eccentric F and the rod V of the crank-disk are so combined as to raise the tool N from the film at themoment when the catch Z engages in the perforation previously made. On an unperforate'd band of film being introduced in the guideway A it is only requisite that the end of the band of film should pass the perforating-tool N and that the latter should pierce the first perforation, as then the catch Z can engage the perforation and draw the band forward for the desired amount for making the second perforation, and so on. 
 In order to prevent the hook Z catching against the edge of the slot  7, through which the perforating-tool passes, I provide a guard consisting of a plate divided into the parts 8 9 10, pivoted to the axis 11. In the normal posit-ion of this guard (shown at 12, Fig. 5) the slot  7 is left uncovered, so that the perforating-tool can pass therethrough in perforating the film. When the hook Z comes close to the slot  7 and to the perforation which has just been pierced in the band of film, a 
finger 13 (fast on a transverse plate which carries the hook or'catch and is operated by the slide) strikes against a button 1 1, Fig. 4, on the aforesaid guard and thrusts itinto the position 15 16, (shown in dotted lines,) in which its end  16 covers the said slot, and as the said guard is situated beneath the film  17, Figs. 4: and 6, it prevents the engagement of the catch or hook in the slot,where it might be otherwise arrested. These arrangements secure the perforation of the band of film with perfect regularity and without the hook or catch in its upward movement rubbing against and scratching the sensitized surface of the film. 
 In machines as hitherto constructed for the most part it is necessary before the band of film can be engaged to make two perforations at least, and the distance of these apart cannot be got to quite truly correspond in length to the stroke of the eccentric, so that in the length of the band the initial error is repeated at every repetition of the image. Two springs  18 19, Fig. 4, covered with velvet or the like, keep the film in position in the guideway when being perforated. The finger 13 is rigidly fixed to the transverse plate  20, carrying the hook or catch Z, which plate  20 itself is operated by the slide X, Figs. 1 and 5. 
 Although I have described the use of one perforating-tool and catch, it will be evident that two or more may be similarly arranged to make two or more perforations transversely of the film. 
 Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of myinvention and the manner in which the same may be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In an apparatus for perforating photographic bands of film, the combination with a guideway for the passage of the band, of a tool for perforating the same,operating means therefor, an adjustable mechanism for intermittently feeding the band to the perforatingtool, a guard for the said intermittently-feeding means, operating means therefor, and means for operating simultaneously the operating means for the tool and feeding mechauism. 
 2. In an apparatus for perforating photographic bands of film, the combination with a guideway for the passage of the band, of means for perforating the same, operating means therefor,means for intermittently feeding the band to the perforating means, operating means therefor, and a guard for the said intermittently-feeding means.
