FREDERICK WIGKS, OF ESHER, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR CHARGING TUBES OR CASES FOR TYPE-COMPOSING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 667,049, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed October 29, 1900. Serial No. 34,838. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED RIoKWIoKs,a citizen of England, residing at Halfway Lodge, Esher, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Charging the Tubes or Cases for Type-Oomposing Machines, (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, dated June 25, 1900, No. 11,492,) of which the following is a specification.
Type-composing machines have a row or rows of tubes or cases of rectangular section, each containing typesof one character superposed in the tube, so that when thelowest type is extruded by finger-key or like mechanism the next in order takes its place, ready to be extruded in its turn.
My invention relates to apparatus for charging such tubes or cases with types taken from a large number lying in rows in a galley, each horizontal row containing types of one character, as I shall describe, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of charging apparatus according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the middle part broken out.
The galley a, which may be of any convenient length, has through its ,back a slot 1) immediately behind the lowest row of types '0 and extending its whole length, and in front of the galley is fixed a bar cZ, having its lower edge sufficiently high above the lower side of the galley to permit a row of types to pass under it. The height of the bar (1 is adj usted by nuts 6 on screw-spindles f, which support each end of the bar. Behind the galley is mounted a long blade g, which by means of a handle h, working a rocking shaft 'Z, having several arms j engaging in slots of the blade can be made to advance through the slot 17 of the galley. The blade 9 is kept down by several spring-rollers Zr, arranged at intervals be- A type tube or case Z, havhind the galley.
ing one of its narrow sides open, being laid on a shelf m in front of the galley, with its open side presented toward the galley, the blade g is advanced so as to push the lowest row of types out of the galley under the front bar d and into the tube or case Z, and the shelf, which is pivotedat n and supported by springs 10, is then slightly canted down in front, so that the types take their proper position in the tube or case Z, which is then removed. The blade g being drawn back, the body of types 0 descends, bringing another row of types down in front of the blade, which pushes them into a fresh tube or case, and thus successive tubes or cases are charged with types until the galley is emptied.
When types have to be arranged in separate rows without being charged into tubes or cases, a metal blade or rule is placed on the shelf m, and when a row of types is lodged on it it is removed and a fresh rule is put on the shelf.
Having thus described the nature of this invention and the best means I know for carrying the same into practical effect, I claim- Apparatus for charging tubes or cases with types comprising a galley holding superposed rows of types, each row consisting of types of one character, and the galley having through its back a slot facing the lowest row, a blade adapted to reciprocate through the said slot a bar fixed above the lower side of the galley at a height sufficient to allow passage for a row of types, a pivoted spring-supported shelf to receive an open-sided tube or case, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK WICKS.
