UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDERIOK M. RUBEE, OF MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,038, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed July 24, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDERICK M. RUBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown,in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wagon-tongue supports, the object being to provide simple and effective means for supporting a wagontongue at any desired inclination, thus relieving the horses necks of the weight of the tongue.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the running-gear and tongue of a vehicle provided with my im- Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a part of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the front axle of the wagon, 2 the front bolster, and 3 the tongue, pivotally secured between the hounds 4. by means of a cross-pin 5.
6 designates a bracket secured centrally to the front side of the axle and formed with perforated ears 7, between which is pivotally secured the upper end of a link 8, formed at its upper end with an eye 9 and at its lower end with parallel perforated cars 10. The eye 9 fits between the ears 7 and is held by a bolt 11, extending through said ears and eye.
12 designates a bail or yoke formed at its ends with perforated ears 13 and having a hook l4 projecting from its cross-bar 15. The yoke or bail 12 embraces the lower end of the link 8 and is secured thereto by a bolt 15 and nut 16.
A plate 17, provided at its rear end with a hook 18, is secured to the upper side of the rear end of the tongue 3, and a chain 19 connects the hook 18 with the hook 14 of the yoke and bail.
To the under surface of the tongue 3, adjacent to its rear end, is secured a shouldered bracket 20, to which is pivotally secured the forward end of a lever 21, the rear end of Serial No. 24,701. (No model.)
which is formed with aseries of perforations 22, through which the bolt 15 is adapted to pass, the lower end of the link 8 being recessed, as shown at 23, to permit of a limited movement of the lever 21 between the cars 10.
The utility of the device constructed as above described will be readily understood. The weight of the tongue is borne by the lever 21 and the link 8, the pressure upon the latter being upward The position of the tongue may be readily adjusted by removing the bolt 15 and shifting the position of the yoke 12 upon the lever 21 and taking up one or more links of the chain 19.
I would have it understood that I reserve the right to make all such changes or modifications in the details of construction as may fall within the scope of the following claims.
I claim-- 1. The combination with the front axle, and tongue of a vehicle; of a link pivotally secured to the axle; a lever pivotally secured to. the tongue; and connected to said link; a yoke adjustably secured upon the lever; and means for suspending said yoke from the rear end of the tongue.
2. The combination with the front axle and tongue of a vehicle; of a link pivotally secured to the axle; a lever pivotally secured at its front end to the tongue and formed at its rear end with a series of perforations; a yoke or bail pivotally secured to the lever and link; and a loose connection between the yoke and the rear end of the tongue.
3. The combination with the front axle of a vehicle; of a pivoted tongue; a bracketsecured to said axle; a link pivotally secured at its upper end to said bracket; a lever pivoted at its front end to the tongue; a yoke or bail pivotally connected to the link and lever, and having a hook projecting therefrom; a hook projecting from the rear end of the lever; and a chain connecting the hook with the hook on the tongue.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRIEDERICK M. RUBEE.
