FFIQEEQ WILLIAM F. BROWN, OF BANKS, ALABAMA.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,001, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed June 6, 1900. Serial No. 19,258. (No model.)
To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Banks, in the county of- Pike and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stationary horizontal steam-boilers, the object being to produce such a boiler which in the arrangement of the water-tubes and fire-fines will present a greater amount of heating-space than is usual in boilers of this class, thereby necessitating the use of considerably less fuel; also, to provide an arrangement of flues whereby the products of combustion are carried from the fire-box to the rear of the boiler and then back through a water-space, thereby utilizing heat from such products to its fullest capacity.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which will-be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse. vertical section on the line x 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line y y of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 represents the boiler in its entirety, provided at each end with the hollow heads 2 and 3, the said heads being connected at their upper portions by means of a crescent-shaped Water space or crown 1*, extending the full length of said boiler. 4 denotes a series of water-tubes arranged below said crescent-shaped waterspace and connected with said water-heads. 5 denotes a Gribed.
rear end of said boiler between a portion of said crescent-shaped water-space and the rear head of said boiler to form an opening whereby the products of combustion may reach the return-flue pipes 5,'the said rear head 3 being connected at its extreme upper portion by a hollow neck 7 with the crescent-shaped water-space of said boiler. 8 denotes a steamdome located above and connected with the said crescent-shaped water-space. 9 denotes a fire-grate located beneath the water-tubes at the forward end of said'boiler, the said grate and boiler being mounted upon a suitable base 10.
In use the products of combustion from the fire will pass between and around the watertu bes 4, passing to the rear end of the boiler and upwardly into the rear ends of the return-flue pipes 5, thence forwardly through said flue-pipes into a suitable smoke-box 12, formed on the front end of said boiler, and thence will be conducted to a suitable flue connected with the said smoke-box.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a boiler wherein the greatest amount of heating-space is employed, thereby necessitating a minimum amount of fuel for heating the water contained in said boiler.
From the description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the c011- struction and operation of my boiler will be readily apparent, and an extended description of the same is-not deemed necessary.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam-boiler, the combination of the hollow heads, a bank of water-tubes connecting said heads, a crown or shell supported above the bank of water-tn bes and provided with hollow heads one of which communicates with the space of the boiler within which the water-tubes are located and the other of which communicates with the smokestack or uptake and forms a smoke-box, fire- 'tubes communicating with said hollow heads, and a hollow neck establishing communication with the interior of the crown or shell and one of the hollow heads of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- HGSSGS.
WILLIAM F. BROWN.
