UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF WEBER, OF ZURIOIL SWITZERLAND.
HYDRAULIC REVERSING-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 666,832, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed April 16,1900. Serial No. 9,097. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF WEBER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Reversing-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object an apparatus adapted to perform the function of motor-pump and reversing-gear; and this object I attain by interposing between a driving and driven shaft pumping appliances organized to perform the function of power-transmitter and reversing-gear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a hydraulic reversing-gear embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof, taken on line a; a; of Fig. 1.
In said figures of drawings, a indicates the driving-shaft, and g the driven shaft, having keyed thereto a bevel-gear f. On the driving-shaft are loosely mounted the oblong casings of two pumps, Whose suction and forcing devices comprise two revoluble wheels 0 and d, having comparatively long intermeshing radial suction and forcing arms 0 and 61, respectively, the spaces between said arms constituting the pump-buckets. The opposite faces of said wheels have a substantially fluidtight bearing on the inner face of their respective casings and on the like face of the heads 19 thereof, while their arms c and d have alike bearing on the inner faces of the semicircular ends of said casings, wheel obeing keyed to shaft a, while wheel cl is loosely mounted on a spindle h.
As shown in Fig. 2, the pump-casing bis of increased cross-sectional area from a transverse line intersecting the axis of wheel 0 to a like line intersecting the axis of Wheel 01, said wheels dividing the part of increased cross-sectional area into suction and forcing chambers I and II, respectively.
The pump-casings b have secured to or formed on their proximate faces a bevelwheel e, concentric with driving-shaft a and meshing with the like wheel f on driven shaft g, and from each of said bevel-wheels 8 projects a rather long hub 71, abutting against each other and having formed near their abutting ends annular discharge-channels p,
communicating with discharge-passages 0 in said hubs, leading to the forcing chambers II of their respective casings I) through ports 2, said ports 2; and passages 0 being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
On driving-shaft a are loosely mounted two discoidal heads is, one for each pump-casing, and pressed to the heads 6 thereof by springs 8, said heads having on their inner faces a circular passage m,in communication with the suction-chambers of their respective pumpcasings through ports 2', (shown in dotted lines in the drawings,) and said heads carry the suction-pipes which are in communication with the passage m.
On the abutting ends of the hubs n of the pump-casings is mounted a cylindrical slidevalve 5 of such a cross-sectional area as to leave both discharge-channels p uncovered when said valve is in its normal position between said channels. The valve is connected to one arm of a two-armed shifting-lever r, fulcrumed at q, the other arm of which lever is connected to any suitable shifting appliance or appliances, so that when said valve is shifted along the hubs in one or the other direction it will close or partially close one orthe other discharge-channel p.
The operation of the described combined pump, power-transmitter, and reversing-gear is as follows: The driving-shaft being set in motion in the direction of the arrow thereon, Fig. 1, the suction and forcing Wheel 0 will be rotated in the same direction and the like wheel d in an opposite direction, whereby a partial vacuum will be formed on the suction side of said wheels or in the suction-chamber I, causing said chamber to fill with water, which is then forced by both wheels 0 and 01 around the semicircular portions of the easings into the forcing or discharge chambers II, from whence it flows unobstructed through the parts 2 and passages 0 in casing-hubs n and is discharged at p. The pumps being started and the-valve s shifted to close the discharge-passage p of the right-hand pump, Fig. 1, for instance, the pressure of the liquid in the forcing-chamber will antagonize the rotation of wheels 0 d, and as liquids are not compressible the resistance will be sufficient to act as a brake and lock said wheel 01 to wheel 0 and cause said right-hand pump to revolvewith shaft a, and through its gear 6 and the gear f on shaft g the latter will be revolved in the direction of the arrow thereon. Inasmuch as the gear f is also geared to the left-hand pump-casing, the latter will be revolved in an opposite direction, whereby the action of its pumping-wheels a dis increased in fact,.doubled-by the rotation of wheel 6 and pump-casing in opposite directions, which is equivalent to an increase in the speed of rotation of the wheel 0 and is or may be equivalent to a speed of said wheel twice that of the driving-shaft a, there being practically no resistance to the discharge of the liquid. Obviously, if the left-hand pump-casing were caused to revolve with the driving-shaft a to drive shaft 9 the latter would rotate in a direction opposite to that of the arrow thereon.
In view of the fact that the heads have a circular passage m connected with their suction-pipes Zsaid passage is in perpetual communication with the inlet or suction port t' in the casing of the pump, and said heads may therefore remain stationary, they being likewise loosely mounted on driving-shaft a.
Having thus described myinvention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with adriving and a driven shaft, rotary pumps operated by and mounted to revolve on said driving-shaft gearing connecting the casings with the driven shaft; of means for locking one or the other pump against rotation on its shaft, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a driving-shaft and a driven shaft, of two pump casings loosely mounted on said driving-shaft gearing connecting the casings with the driven shaft, pumping appliances operated by the drivingshaft, and means for closing the dischargeport of either pump-casing, causing the liquid in the forcing-chamber to act as a brake and lock the pump whose discharge is so closed to the driving-shaft and thereby transmit its motion to the driven shaft and cause the other vpump-casing to revolve in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of said driving-shaft, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a driving-shaft and a driven shaft, of two pump-casings loosely mounted on said driving-shaft, gearing connecting the casings with the driven shaft, pumping appliances operated from the driving-shaft,adischarge-port for each pumpcasing, said ports located close to each other, and a valve adapted to close one or the other port to cause the liquid in the forcing-chamber to act as a brake on the pumping appliances and therethrough lock the pn m p-casin g whose discharge-port is closed to revolve with the driving-shaft and transmit its motion to the driven shaft, and at the same time cause the other pump-casing to revolve in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the driving-shaft, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a driving-shaft and a driven shaft, of two pump-casings loose on said driving-shaft gearing on said casings for driving the driven shaft, and pumping appliances comprising two inter-meshing bucketwheels dividing their respective casings into suction and forcing chambers, one of said wheels fast on the driving-shaft and the other loose on a spindle, discharge-ports in communication with said forcing-chambers and means for closing one or the other of said ports, whereby the liquid in the forcing-chamber whose discharge is closed will act as a brake on the bucket-wheels and therethrough lock the casing to the driving-shaft and transmit its motion to the driven shaft and cause the other pump-casing to revolve in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of said driving-shaft, for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a driving-shaft of two pumps the casings of which are mounted to revolve on said shaft and provided on their proximate faces with a bevel-gear, intermeshing bucket-wheelsfor each pump, one of said wheels secured to said driving-shaft and the other loose on a spindle, said wheels dividing their pump-casings into suction and forcing chambers, and said casings provided with hubs abutting against each other and having an annular discharge-passage near their ends in communication with the forcing-chambers of their respective casings, and a cylindrical slide-valve mounted on said hubs and operating to close the discharge-passage of one or the other pump-hub; of a driven shaft and a gear thereon geared with the pump-gears, for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination with a driving-shaft of two pumps the casings of which are mounted to revolve on said shaft and provided on their proximate faces with a bevel-gear, inter-meshing bucket-wheels for each pump, one of said wheels secured to said driving-shaft and the other loose on a spindle, said wheels dividing their pump-casings into suction and forcing chambers, and said casings provided with hubs abutting against each other and having an annular discharge-passage near their ends in communication with the forcing-chambers of their respective casings, a cylindrical slidevalve mounted on said hubs and operating to close the discharge-passage of one or the other pump-hub, a head 70 for each pump-casing loose on the driving-shaft and having an annularpassage connected withthesuction-pipe and in communication with the suctionchamber of their respective casings and springs pressing said heads to said casings; of a driven shaft and a gear thereon geared with the pump-gears, for the purpose set forth.
