UNITED STATES JACOB HUBER AND JOHN H. MCGINTY, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 666,678, dated January 29, 190i.
Application filed May 4, 1900. Serial No. 15,510. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB HUBER and JOHN H. MOGINTY, citizens of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in gas-burners.
It has for its objects to provide for the automatic shutting off of the gasor fluid in event of the accidental extinguishment or blowing out of the flame, to simplify construction, and to lessen cost of manufacture and otherwise promote the utility of the device.
It consists of a nozzle or burner attachment for the service-pipe equipped or fitted with a tip having a lower end extension, preferably laterally apertured, with an expanding and contracting metal rod or bar connected thereto and adapted to engage a safety or cut-01f valve, and certain details of construction and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of our invention, Figure l is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of our invention and the same remain intact and be protected.
In carrying out our invention we provide a burner or nozzle 1, adapted to be suitably connected or attached to the service-pipe or an arm thereof, as shown. The humor or nozzle 1 is preferably constructed of two sections 2 and 3, screw-threaded together, the top section having a tip 4 screwed into the upper end thereof, with a lower end extension 4. The
latter is provided with lateral gas-passages 5 for the passage of the gas from the burner pipe or tube thereinto on its way to the tip 4:.
Suitably connected to the downward extension at is an expanding and contracting rod or bar 6, one end thereof being preferably to said rod or bar.
screwed into the lower end of said extension 4 or otherwise directly attached thereto to provide for the transmission of the heat of the tip when the gas has been ignited or lighted The other or short arm of the lever '7 is adapted to be engaged and the lever actuated by a spring-seated push-button 9, with the innor end of its stem engaging the short arm of the lever and its enlargement adapted to be readily engaged by the finger or thumb. The valve 8 may be of other desired construction.
It will be observed that by pressing the push-button the lever 7 will be actuated and operate upon and open the ball-valve 8, thus permitting the flow of gas or fluid past said valve into the burner-tube, thence passing through the lateral gas-passages 5 in the lower end extension of the gas-tip, and finally out throughthe flame-slit, when the gas may be lighted or ignited. Now in event of the accidental extinguishment or blowing out of the flame it will be seen that the rod or bar 6, previously expanded by the heat from the flame, thus normally holding or keeping the valve 8 open at that time, will contract upon cooling, thus permitting its lower end to be moved in a direction away from the lever 7, holding the valve 8 open, and consequently allowing said valve to close and automatically cut ofi the escape or flow of the gas.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas-burner, the combination of a burner-tube suitably adapted for attachment to the service-pipe and having a flame-tip, with an inward extension having lateral gaspassages therethrough, and an expansibl e and contractible rod or bar connected to said inward extension of said tip, a valve and It may be, however, straight or spiral This bar or rod is prefer means for closing said valve automatically upon the contraction of said rod or bar, substantially as described.
2. In a gas-burner, the combination of a burner-tube provided with a flame-tip having an inward extension having lateral gas-pas sages, a zigzag expansible and contractible bar or rod connected thereto, a valve and means for closing said valve automatically when said rod or bar contracts, substantially as specified.
3. In a gas-burner, the combination of a burner-tube, a flame-tip connected to said burner-tube and provided with lateral gas inlets or passages, an expansible and contractible bar or rod suitably connected to said burner-tube and a lever suitably arranged for engagement with said bar or rod, and a shut-off valve adapted to be released by the movement or action of said lever, substantially as set forth.
4t. In a gas-burner, the combination of a burner-tube, a flame-tip connected to said burner-tube and provided with lateral gas inlets or passages, an expansible orcontractible bar or rod suitably connected to said burner-tnbe,.a lever adapted to be engaged by said rod or bar, and said lever, itself, adapted to engage a shut-off valve, and a push-button adapted to engage said lever, substantially as specified.
5. In a gas-burner, the combination of a lever with one arm adapted to engage a shutoff valve, and a push-button with its inner end or stem adapted to engage the short arm of said lever, said lever engaged by a contractible and expansible bar or rod'connected to the burner-tip, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB HUBER. JOHN H. MCGINTY.
