UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUCY A. DIEHL, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRU N K-FOLLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,653, dated January 29, 1901.
A iination filedNovember 3, 1900- Serial No. 85,347.- (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern.-
Beit known that I, LUCY A. DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Followers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
7 clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates, primarily, to trunks and like devices for packing and carrying clothing, has especial reference to followers for securing articles of clothing in trunks, dress-cases, or other receptacles to prevent them being tossed about and rumpled in handling or in transit, and consists in certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan View, partly in section, of part of the follower. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a modified construction of the follower; Fig. 4, a perspective of the fastening device used thereon, and Fig. 5 a vertical longitudinal section of two of the overlapping members.
Reference being had to the drawings and the numerals thereon, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 represent the sections of which the tubular follower is composed. To the sections 1 and 4 are connected sections 2, 3, 5, and 6 by means of the members 7, 8, 9, and 10 telescoping into the sections 1 and 4, thus making the rectangular follower longitudinally extensible and contractible. To the sections 1, 2, and 6 are connected sections 3, 4, and 5 by means of the members 11, 12, l3, l4, and telescopically fitting into the cross members 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20, thus making the follower laterally extensible and contractible. In the sections 2, 3, 5, and 6 are pins 21, which are movable through said sections and are pushed into the sides and ends of the receptacle, thus holding the follower in any position it may be placed.
It is obvious that only one end of the follower may be extensible and contractible longitudinally without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In Fig. 3 a modified construction of my invention is shown, and in which 22, 23, 24, and represent the difierent sections of which the follower is composed. The sections 22 and 23 are connected to the sections 24 and 25 by means of the members 26 and 27, which are loosely held in place by means of the slot 28 and the rivet 29, so that the follower may be extended and contracted longitudinally. The sections 23 and 24 are connected to the sections 22 and 25 by means of the members 30 and 31, which are loosely held in place by means of the slot 28 and the rivet 29. To the sections 22 and 25 are connected members and 41, which strengthen the follower and are also loosely connected by a slot28 and a rivet 29 to admit of extension and contraction. On the sections 22, 23, 24, and 25 are dogs having a pointed member 34, pivotally connected at 32 and provided with a vertical flange 33 for pushing the points of said dogs into the sides and ends of the receptacle and withdrawing the same.
By constructing the follower separate and detached from a trunk or other receptacle it may be secured in any desired plane or angle, according to the position and condition of the upper surface of the contents thereof, and they will be securely held against rum- "pling while being handled in transit from one place to another.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A longitudinally and laterally extensible follower, provided with means to be projected into the body'of the receptacle for securing the follower in any desired position.
2. Alongitudinally and laterally extensible and contractible rectangular follower, provided with means secured thereto to be'projected in to the body of a receptacle for securing the follower in anydesired position.
3. A tubular follower made in sections telescopically connected and longitudinally and laterally extensible and contractible, and provided with means to be projected into the body of the receptacle for securing the follower in any desired position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUCY A. DIEHL.
