SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '664.639, dated December 25, 1900.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Open Grat-es, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to that class of open grates which are provided with a chambered back or casing for the passage of air which is heated therein and then employed for heating the same or an adjoining room.
It is my purpose to provide a simple and inexpensive construction by which a higher temperature may be imparted to the air by retarding its passage through said casing, and thereby giving it a longer exposure to the heat, and by causing it to have an increased surface contact with the heated walls.
It is my object also to provide an open tireplace orgrate with an air-heating back having a novel construction by which the combustion of closely-packed fuel is promoted and whereby the back, which is more directly exposed to the iire, can easily be renewed should it burn out or become injured from any other cause, provision being made whereby it can be sealed against the penetration of smoke or fire-gases into the air-heating chamber.
My invention also comprises other novel and useful features, all of which will be fully described in the following specification and then particularly pointed out and defined in the claims at the end thereof.
For the purposes of this description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a fireplace having my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken vfrom front to rear. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, partly in vertical section, to show the interior of the casing.
