UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J.
MOORE INSTRUMENT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 664,295, dated December 18, 1900. Application led August ZO, 1900. Serial No. 27,437. (No model.)
To @ZZ wlw-m, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES J. SADLER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Stockings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to elastic stockings; and it consists of the novel construction hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved elastic stocking specially. designed to afford comfort and ease to the wearer, which shall. be soft and pliable, cling to the limb, and fit the same as perfectly as possible.
A further object is to reinforce the stocking at the heel, foot, and top with a soft elastic web, whereby all irritation of the most tender skin will be avoided.
A further object is to provide an improved elastic stocking which shall have greater textile strength than stockings heretofore invented.
A further object is to provide an elastic stocking which can be washed in tepid water and yet retain its elasticity and soft texture.
Figure l is a side View. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the ankle and foot portion and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation showing a portion of the body of the stocking, enlarged. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line a a of Fig. 2.
In the construction of the device as shown 5 indicates the leg or body of the stocking, 6 the heel, and 7 the foot.
My improved stocking is provided upon its exterior with a series of horizontal cylindrical elastic bodies 8, which form the warp and which project almost wholly upon the exterior surface of the stocking, whereby irritating projections are avoided upon the interior of the stocking and greater comfort and ease are given the wearer. The woof is preferably composed of pure-dye silk interwoven with the elastic bodies 8. Said elastic bodies 8 are preferably what is known as vulcanizedrubber thread.
The foot 7 is provided upon its interior surface with a reinforcement or shield 9, composed of a soft elastic web, which is preferably devoid of rubber and made wholly of loosely woven or knitted silk or other textile material, and the upper and lower edges only of said reinforcement are attached'to the foot, the remaining or intervening portion of said reinforcement being unattached. This m akes the stocking at those places softer and more comfortable to the wearer than those stockings in which the reinforcements are rigid with the stocking at all points. Furthermore, by this arrangement these pieces may be removed when it is so desired and others se.
cured there instead. The heel 6 is also provided with the reinforcement 9 of the construction just'described. The top of the leg 5 is also provided with the reinforcement 9, as just described.
I claim-- l. An elastic stocking having a warp consistin g of a series of elastic or rubber threads located upon its exterior, whereby irritating projections adjacent the skin of the wearer are avoided, substantially as specified.
2. An elastic stocking consisting of a woofsilk interwoven with a warp of rubber threads, said rubber threads being located nearer the exterior than the interior of said stocking, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. SADLER.
