Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
HEINRICH ERNST GUSTAV UHLIG, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE MARMORIT GESELLSOHAFT, GESELLSCHAFT MIT BESOHRANKTER I-IAFTUNG, OF SAME PLACE.
METHOD OF VEININ G OR MARBLING ARTlFlC-IAL STONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,194, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed May 13 1898. Serial N- 680|627- (N0 specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEINRICH ERNST Gus- TAV UHLIG, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Veining or Marbling Artificial Stone, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a method of producing veins and spots for imitating marble or other stones while molding stone-like compositions; and it consists in applying a uniform layer or film of color to a smooth surface, such as a plate of glass, upon which I 5 layer while still moist the more or less viscid or pulpy artificial-stone mass is forcibly spattered by suitable meansas, for instance, with the aid of a brush. Thus the color is imbibed by the irregularly-distributed pulpystone mass partly in the shape of fine veins and partly as spots, and, notwithstanding a uniform layer of color was spread over the glass plate, yet it will be quite irregularly distributed in the artificial-stone mass in the form of veins and spots, just as in natural marble, owing to the sprinkling of the thicklyliquid artificial-stone mass. By this method the imitation will be effected more naturally and quickly than by applying the color to the soft-stone mass by means of a drawing-pen, o brush, or the like, inasmuch as the formation of the veins and spots is entirely left at large. As soon as the layer or film of color is covered with the pulpy-stone mass by the sprinkling and the color has entered into the mass pulpy-stone mass or mortar is poured on the veined layer until the desired thickness of artificial stone is obtained, which is then dried and hardened in the usual manner.
Of course when sprinkling or pouring the pulpy-stone mass upon the glass plate a molding-frame may be employed, which is to be re moved as soon as the stone mass begins to set.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process, which consists in applying a surface coat of coloring-matter to a smooth or polished surface, forcibly spattering onto the coated surface a more or less fluid arti- 5o ficial-stone compound, and building up the block or slab by addition of artificial-stone compound or mortar, substantially as set forth.
