WASHING MACHINE.
(Application led June 21, 1899.|

gnou/hoz am NITED STATES ALONZO A. CASLER, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 664,124, dated December 18A, 1900.
Application filed .Tune 21, 1899. Serial No. 721,405. iNo model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO A. CAsLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon., which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Washing-machines, and especially to that class which embodies a rotating tub provided at the bottom with rubbing-cleats and an upper rubbing-disk separate from the tub.
The object of my invention is the provision of a simple, durable, and inexpensive Washing-machine which is very useful and practical. This object I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved Washing-machine, the tub, partially in section, to show fully the arrangement of all the parts constituting the washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a front view of the frame, the tub removed, but shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a top view of the frame and upper rubbingdisk, showing the mode of bracing the same and general construction of the frame and mode of attaching the wringer-board. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of pivotbearing, showing the general construction of the same.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate the several parts throughout the several views. Y
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the tub with a slatted bottom 2. A vertical shaft 3 is secured in the center, but a solid shaft may be used. The lower end of the shaft is secured within a Iianged sleeve 4, which maybe bolted to the bottom of the tub, or a bolt 5 may pass through the center of the shaft and through the bottom of the tub. The upper rubbing-disk 6 is also slatted upon the under side similar to the bottom of the tub and provided with a hole through the center to conform to the size of the vertical shaft 3. This shaft retains the upper rubbing-disk inthe center of the tub, but allows a vertical sliding movement to the same.
7 indicates a Wood cross-bar screwed firmly to the upper face of the disk 6 to prevent the disk from warping. It is provided upon each side of the center with screw-eyes 8, in which is pivoted the brace-rod 9. The said brace is composed of a straight arm and two diverging arms 10 and 11. rIhe straight arm passes through au elongated hole 12 in the post 13, which forms a portion of the frame 14. A circular ring 15, having two inclined surfaces 16, surrounds the shaft and is secured to the disk 6, and a sleeve 17 is secured upon the' shaft. Upon each side of the sleeve are rollers 18. The sleeve and rollers are adjustable upon the shaft 3.
When the Water and clothes are placed within the tub, the upper rubbing-disk is placed upon the shaft 3, bearing upon the clothes. The sleeve, with the rollers, is then placed upon the shaft until the rollers come in contact with the lower portion of the ring and clamped rigid upon the shaft by the setscrew 19. It will be readily seen by those skilled in the art that when the tub A is rotated the same motion is conveyed to the shaft, sleeve, and rollers. The upper rubbing-disk being held from rotating with the tub by the brace 9, the rollers 18, passing up and down on the inclined surfaces 16 of the ring 15, convey to the upper rubbing-disk a vertical reciprocating movement.
The frame 14 is composed of a center plank 20, provided at its front end with two legs 21, formed of one piece bent upon itself to form a U-shaped bracket. The said legs are bolted to the under side of the front end of the center plank. A cross-piece 22 is secured to stien and prevent the legs from spreading. The rearend of the frame is provided with the square post 13. The rear legs 23 are bolted to the edge of the center plank 20 and to the post 13, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The upper end of the post is provided with the U- shaped bracket 24. To this bracket is secured a Wringer-board 25. This construction constitutes a cheap, durable, and efficient frame.
The pivot-bearing for the tub is composed of an upper and lower plate 26 and' 27. The said plates when riveted or bolted together IOO form a V-shaped groove around the inner periphery and a sleeve 28, having a ball race or channel around' the same, and a sufficient quantity of balls 29 are placed within the channel and the groove formed by the plates 26 and 27 to form a ball-bearing and hold the sleeve in position. The shaft 30 passes through the sleeve 28, the hub of the spider 3l resting upon the upper edge of the sleeve. The lower end of the shaft is held in position by the hanger 32, bolted upon the under side of the center plank 20. A wood spider 33 is screwed upon the spider 31, and upon the same rests the tub A. This arrangement enables the operator to remove the tub at will.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a washing-machine, the combination with a revolnble tub having a separate upper rubbing-disk and a vertical central post secured in the bottom ol the tub, a cam-plate Secured upon the top of the upper rubbingdisk, the plate having two inclined faces, a sleeve secured upon the center post, the sleeve provided with rollers and a cam-plate adapted to give to the upper rubbing-disk a vertical reciprocating movement substantially as described.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination with a revoluble tub having a vertical post secured therein, a rubbing-disk surrounding said post, a plate or runway carried by said disk, and a sleeve secured upon said post carrying rollers to contact said plate.
3. In a Washing-machine, the combination with a revoluble tub having a vertical post secured therein, a rubbing-disk surrounding said post, of a plate or runway carried by said disk, a sleeve secured upon said post carrying rollers to contact said plate and means hinged to the top of the disk to prevent the latter from rotating, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a revoluble washing-machine, or tub having an upper separate rubbing-disk and a vertical post secured in the bottom and center thereof, a Y-shaped bracket or brace hinged to the top of the disk and having a straight arm, a post provided with an elongated opening to receive said arm to prevent the disk from rotating, a plate or runway carried by said disk, and a sleeve secured Vupon said post carrying rollers to contact said plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
