TlRE-ARMOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,121, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed August 22, 1900- Serial No. 27,692. No model.)
' To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELsoN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Armor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to armor for the tires of velocipedes for use in frosty weather; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side view of the armor. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the armor drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showing the armor applied to a tire. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing a modification of the armor. Fig. 5 is a cross-section taken on the line a; 0: in Fig. 4. v
A is a concavo-convex spring-hoop having an opening a, which is slipped over the tire when same is deflated. This hoop is pro vided with fastening devices I), such as straps or strings, at various points for attaching it to the rim of the wheel and preventing it from creeping. After the hoop is secured the tire is inflated, so that the hoop is stretched slightly, and the ends of it come together at its opening or they may overlap each other slightly. The hoop is provided with sharp projections c, which may be turned-up portions formed by punching holes through it without removing the metal, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or they may be pointed pegs.
When pointed pegs c are used, the hoop is preferably formed of a band of leather A, provided with a metallic back piece (1, having turned-up base-flanges d at its edges for inclosing and protecting the edges of the leather band. The pegs c are formed of spring-steel wire and are set into the leather band at an angle to its periphery and not radially of its center.
What I claim is 1. In a tire-armor, the combination, with a concavo-convex hoop 'formed of leather and provided with a series of metallic projections, of a metallic back plate provided with projecting flanges cl which inclose the side edges of the said hoop, and means for securing the said hoop and back plate over the tire, substantially as set forth.
2. A tire-armor comprising a concavo-convex hoop formed of leather and having pegs set at an angle to its periphery, and provided with a metallic back plate having flanges which engage with the edges of the said band, and means fox-securing the said hoop over the tire, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON BROWN.
