Be it known that I, MATTHIAS .CRowTHEm a citizen of the United States, residing at Westl Pittston, in the 'county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Ejectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and' use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hydraulic ejectors or jet-pumps.
My obj ect is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective means of conveying water for considerable distances and over undulating sur-A faces, particularly in mines.
By the use of my invention I bring the water from the most remote portions of the mine and from dips and chambers to the main sump atthe foot of the shaft, where it can be pumped to the surface by means of the ordinary forcepump, and providing at the same time a line of pipe to all parts of the mine. This line of pipe may be used at any time for a fire-line by simply disconnecting or shutting 0E the ejector.
It is not the purpose of my invention to raise the water to any greatV height, although it may be raised to the height of twenty feet over an obstruction or up an incline without in any way interfering with the working of the device, and should it be necessary to bring the water to a higher level it may be done by.
the introduction of another ejector or as many more as the case may require.
My device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like ligures of reference refer to like parts in the different views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the ejector. Fig. 2 is a horizontal plan of the system in general. Y Fig. 3 is an elevation of the standpipe of the mine, showing the force-pump and sump.
1 is the outlet or delivery pipe; 2, the inlet or suction pipe.
3 is the jet. (Shown in the drawings as a part of the nozzle, but which may be made separate and attached thereto.)
4e is the nozzle or supply-pipe, which is threaded, so as to be adjustable, and which I make of some non-corrosive material.
5 is an end piece threaded to correspond with and engage the nozzle 4.
6 is a lock or jam-nut to hold the nozzle Ll in place after it has been adjusted in the end piece 5.
7 is the packing in the joints.
8 is the choke in the delivery end. (Shown in the drawings as a part of the shell, but which can be made separately and attached to the inside of the shell.)
9 is the vacuum-dome; 10, the st-and or discharge pipe from the force-pump; 11, the check-valveto prevent the back pressure on the pump 12".
13 is the sump, where the water is emptied by the ejector and taken up by the force-pump.
14 is the foundation for the stand-pipe; 15, the bed of the force-pump.
1G is a shut-off to be used when-it is desired to use the pipe-line for ire purposes.
17 represents shut-offs in the pipe-line for the purpose of directing the iow of water to desired points in the mine.
The working of the device is as follows: The nozzle 4e is connected to a water-supply pipe, the source of supply not being essential. For the saving of expense and for convenience, however, I obtain this supply from the stand-pipe at the shaft, where the water is being forced to the surface by the forcepump 12, located at the foot of the shaft, thus providing a' pressure equal to the weight of a column of water of a height equal to the distance from the foot of the shaft to the surface of the grou nd. The Water passes through the nozzle 4e and is discharged from the jet 3 with sufficient force to form a vacuum when passing through between the faces of the choke 8, the vacuum-dome 9 rendering the suction formed more perfect in its operation. After the water is started through the nozzle and the suction is thereby started the working of the device is notinterfered with by the admission of air, mud, or any solid substance which is not too large to pass through the choke 8.
-The working of the device is continuous, requiring no attention whatever, thus saving the expense of pumps in the remote portions IOO of the mine and the carrying of steam to the pumps; also, dispensing with the services of an attendant, who would be required if pumps and steam were used. The expense of laying a re-line is also saved by the use of this de- Vice.
My device may be used equally as well for a condenser as for an ejector, in which case the exhaust-pipe of an engine or pump is connected to the suction-pipe'2, and the jet of water passing through the steam condenses the same, and the suction thus formed tends to relieve the pressure of the exhaust on the engine or pump.
It will be observed that it is essential that the delivery-pipe l shall not only be in communication with the jet-pipe leading from the stand-pipe, but also with the suction-pipe 2, so that there will be an uninterrupted flow of Water both from the jet-pipe and the suctionpipe into the delivery-pipe and also that when the valve 16 in the delivery-pipe is closed the current or flow from the stand-pipe is reversed and directed into the suction-pipe and out through the branch or branches thereot` to the drift Where the re exists.

what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus of the sort described, the combination of a stand-pipe, a reservoir, a force-pu mp emptying said reservoir into said stand-pipe, an ejector having its dischargepipe leading to the reservoir and provided With a shut-olf valve, the nozzle of said ejector receiving its actuating-jet from thc standpipe, and a supply-pipe connected to said ejector and leading to the various pools 0r reservoirs throughout the mine, this supplypipe and its branches heilig provided with shut-olf valves whereby a portion of the water pumped into the stand-pipe Will be employed to automatically collect the water from the various pools of the mine and empty it into the reservoir and the su pply-pipe and its branches may, in case of fire, be supplied with Water from the stand-pipe.
