MACHINE FOR IRONING SHlRT-FRONTS OR OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 663,585, dated December 11, 1900.
Application filed July 30, 1898. Serial No. 687,860. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LSARKIs HAROUTIOUN SE- KIAN, of Dickinson road, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Ironing Shirt-Fronts or other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, primarily, to machines for ironing shirt-fronts in which a reciprocating bed carrying an ironing table travels to and fro under a revolving heated roller mounted in fixed or stationary bear ings. It is designed to iron the shirt-fronts transversely one side or half of a shirt-front at a time or both sides or halves of the front at the same time without one side overlapping the other, or the right-hand side of the front of one shirt and the left side of the front of another shirt at the same time. It will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which are illustrated several modifications of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan of the ironing-machine, showing myinvention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan of one part or half of the ironing board or table when divided into two separate parts;
, Fig. 3, a plan of the other part or half of ironing board or table corresponding with Fig. 2, but showing a slight modification in construction; Fig. 4, a side elevation of Fig. 2; Fig 5, a side elevation showing a modification in the form of base upon which the ironing board or table or surface is mounted, the top being similar to Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a plan of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a plan showing another modification in the shape of the board or table-top; Fig. 8, a plan showing another modified shape of board or table-top; Fig. 9, a side elevation of Fig. 8; Fig. 10, aplan showing modification of board or table-top in which both sides of opening are out in steps.
As the invention comprises a recess or opening a or a at one end of the board or table to receive the seam of the shirt-opening it is evident that such space may be constructed in any suitable or desirable way and of any convenient or suitable shape.
In Figs. 1 to 4 the board or table A is constructed in two parts, one right hand and the other left, and are used in pairs, preferably placed on the machine in the relative positions shown in Fig.1 and Figs. 2 and 3 taken together, with the space a to receive the seam of theshirt openingbetween them. They may as a matter of course be placed in any other relative position and either longitudinally or transversely of the machine. At the other end of the board is the recess E to receive the neckband. They are made loose and portable and readily removable as they are required in different positions in the machine for different methods or processes of ironing or finishing the fabrics. Thus for laying the starch evenly over the surface of the shirts the boards or tables are placed transversely of the machine at right angles to the position shown in Fig. l, and for finally finishing or glossing the shirt-front the boards or tables are placed longitudinally of the machine, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
At the corner of one or both of the boards or tables shown in Figs. 1 to7 Icut out or form a recess or notch or space a-of eitherof theshapes shown or any other convenient or suitable shape to receive the seam or joint at the bottom of the opening of the shirt-front and to permit of shirts of varying lengths being ironed upon the same table. One half or side of the shirt-front is ironed on one part of the table and the other side ironed on the other part of the table, two shirts being under operation at the same time.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 8 to 10 instead of severing the board or table wholly or making it wholly of two parts the table A for ironing both sides of the shirt is made in one piece with the recess or notch a at one end to permit of the seam or joint at the bottom edge of the opening of the shirt-front being turned down or inward, and thus allow of one half or side of the shirt-front being ironed without one edge over lapping the other edge thereof. The neckband of the shirt falls into the recess a The recesses a and a are shaped by being stepped, inclined, or curved to adapt the table to different lengths of shirts or shi rt-fronts and permit of shirts with short fronts being ironed on the same table as those with long fronts, and vice versa. The recess or notch a or a in the modifications of the table may be of the shape shown in any other modification of the table.
It will be evident that the board or table may be extended to any desired extent or shape at either side for any special purposesuch as forironing collars, culfs, or the likewithont departing from the characteristic feature of my invention.-
The board or table is in every instance supported on a base B, with space or opening I) underneath to receive the folds of material of the body of the shirt to which the front is attached, and in every instance is provided with a recess for the neckband of the shirt.
The board or table is covered with a piece D of felting, flannel, or other soft material suitable for ironing upon.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an ironing-machine the combination with a heated roller mounted in fixed bearings and a reciprocating bed, beneath the roller, of an ironing-table mounted upon the said bed, provided With two recesses, that at one end to receive the neckband, and that at the other end stepped to permit the seam of the shirt-opening to fall below the surface of the table substantially as described.
2. In an ironing-machine the combination with a heated roller mounted in fixed bearings and a reciprocating bed, of an ironingtable mounted upon the said bed made in two parts, with a recess at one end forthe neckband and a recess at the other end for the seam of the shirt-opening, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
S. H. SEKIAN.
