Be it known that I, FRED E. YATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke and Pole Thimble, of which the following is a specification.

Thisinvention relates to a neck-yoke and pole thimble; and the object in viewis to provide a simple and effective device of this character convenient to manipulate in harnessing, absolutely reliable, strong and durable, and possessing antirattling characteristics.

The invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The n um eral 1 designates a pole of any preferred construction having a thimble or tip 2 on the outer reduced end provided with a longitudinally-disposed lug 3 on the upper portion adjacent the outer terminal. At a distance inward from the lug 3 the thimble or tip has a circumferential shoulder it to thereby provide outer and inner stops, and the outer surface of the thimble or tip is regularly tapered toward the lug end. On the thmble or tip a sleeve 5 is removably and rotatably mounted and has a longitudinal groove 6, which reduces or tapers from the outer enlarged portion thereof toward the inner end of the sleeve, an elongated enlargement 7 being formed on the sleeve to'accommodate the formation of the groove and having a diametrical extent at its outer end slightly greater than the diameter of the combined lug and adjacent part of the tip to permit the lug to readily pass through thispart of the groove.

A transversely-extending boss S is fastened by suitable means on the sleeve 5 at about a central point and has an aperture 9 therethrough at a slight rearward angle and opening'into an inner socket 10. This socket and other to prevent a full fall to the rear.

aperture respectively receive the head and shank of a bent coupling-pin 11, which swivels in the boss 8 and has its opposite extremity fitted in an opening 12 and socket 13 of a boss 14 on the under central portion of a transversely-extendin g sleeve 15 to fit over a neckyoke 16 of any suitable form. By bending the pin 11 and correspondingly shaping the apertures 9 and l2 in the bosses 8 and 14 the necessary rearward cant is given the neckyoke 16, the full strain on the pin being overcome by causing the bosses to bear on each The pin is loose in the bosses, and when the neckyoke is unattached it is free to move forward a sufficient distance to avoid binding and fracturing, and the movement in a forward direction beyond a predetermined distance is also prevented by the bosses.

In assembling the parts the sleeve 5 is arranged with the enlargement 7 uppermost and the rear terminal of the groove 6 in alinement with the lug 3, and the said sleeve is pushed over the lug 3 on the thimble or tip 2. The partswill then be in the position shown by Fig. 2, and to bring them into the operative position (shown by Fig. 1) the sleeve 5is rotated on the thimble or tip 2 until the boss S and the sleeve 15 are uppermost and the groove 6 and enlargement 7 beneath the said thimble or tip, and thus bring the front end of the said sleeve 5 adjacent the lug 3,-and by reason of the close arrangement of the said sleeve in view of this disposition it will be prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged, and as the said sleeve cannot rotate far enough when the neck-yoke is operatively attached to the harness to bring the groove 6 in alinement with the lug 3 a reliable connection of the several parts is provided. The sleeve 5, however, is free to move around the thimble or tip 2 to compensate for the play of the neck-yoke, and this movement, in conjunction with that at right angles thereto which is allowable through the medium of IOO and in view of the strength and durability, as Well as the simplicity, of the several elements included Within the improved attachment, avaluable accessory to the art to which the invention pertains is produced.

To accommodate various applications, changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing-from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a thimble or tip for application to the end of a pole having a longitudinally-disposed lug at the outer upper portion thereof, an inner circumferential shoulder, and a regularly-tapered surface between the shoulder and the lug, a tapered sleeve removably and rotatably mounted on the said thixnble or tip, having a boss at an intermediate point and a longitudinally-disposed groove which tapers in depth toward the rear of the sleeve, a neck-yoke thimble also provided wit-h a boss to bear on the boss of the sleeve, anda coupling-pin movably connected to the opposite bosses.

2. A device of the character set forth comprising a pole thimble or tip, a sleeve removably and rotatably mounted on the said thimble or tip and having a boss 'at an intermediate point, a -neck-yoke sleeve or thimble also provided with a boss to bear on the boss of the sleeve fitted to the pole thimble or tip, and a coupling-pin loosely engaging and connecting the bosses and the parts supporting the latter.

3. A device of the character set forth, cornprising a thimble or tip fora pole, a. sleeve removably and rotatably mounted on the said thimble or tip and having a boss thereon extending in a transverse direction and provided with a socket and an opening, a neckyoke sleeve also having a boss in contact with the boss on the sleeve fitted over the thimble or tip and provided with an opening and a socket, and a bent coupling-pin headed at opposite extremities and movably connected to the bosses.
