MOWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 663,356, dated. December 4, 1900.

Be it known that 1, JOHN ISRAEL NEW- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of \Varren and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mowing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mowing-machines and contemplates the provision of an attachment embodying an auxiliary cutting apparatus calculated to materially increase the efticiency of a mowing-machine in cutting peavines, clover, and grain that is massed close to the ground, the said attachment being readily applicable to and as readily removable from a mowing-machine, so that it may be taken off when not needed.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed d rawings, in which 7 Figure l is a broken perspective view illustrating a portion of the cutting apparatus of a mowing-machine and myiznproved attachment in its operative position thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the auxiliary cutting apparatus which is comprised in my improved attachment. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the broken lined 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A is a finger-bar forming part of the cutting apparatus of a mowing-machine and having a runner a at its outer end and the usual guard-fingers b at intermediate points of its length.
B is a sickle, which comprises the usual bar 0 and knives d and is designed to be reciprocated in the ordinary manner by mechanism which I have not deemed it necessary to show, and C is the housing of my improved attachment. This housing comprises an inner inclined section 2, of light sheet metal, which has a vertically-disposed flangefat its upper end, a horizontal flange g at the forward portion of its lower edge, and an outer section h, also of light sheet metal, which has a horizontal fianget'at its lower edge and a vertical flange j at its upper edge, as shown. The flange g of housing-section rests upon the finger-bar A and is detachably connected thereto by screws 7; or other suitable means, while the flange 7; of section it rests upon and may, if desired, be detachably connected to arms Z, connected to and extending laterallyoutward from the end runnera, as shown. The sections 6 7t are connected together by a transverse bolt m, which extends through their upper flanges and serves the additional function of a fulcrum for a vertically-oscillating lever D. This lever D is provided at its forward end with a vertically-disposed sickle E, which is made up of a bar n and knives p, the latter being designed to work alongside of and in conjunction with knives g at the forward edge of a vertical extension '7" of the housing-section c after the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
F is a right-angle bar, which has one of its arms detach-ably connected by bolts 3 orother suitable means to the sickle B and its other arm arranged and adapted to move between guides f on the end runner a.
G is a swinging piece pivotally connected to the rear end of the lever D, so as to enable it to swing in the direction of the length thereof, and having its lower end bifurcated, as indicated by u.
H is a casting connected to the bar F and having apertured lugs v, and I is a pitman pivotally connected at its upper end to the bifurcated lower end of the swinging piece G and pivotally connected at its lower end to the lugs 72 of the casting H. By virtue of the relative arrangement of the bar. F and lever D and the driving connection between the same it will be seen that when the sickle B is reciprocated the lever will be oscillated in a vertical plane, so as to move the knives p thereon up and down alongside the knives g on the housing-section e and enable the said knives to make ashear and consequently easy out. It will also be observed that the sickle E on lever D will be oscillatedi. 6., moved up and down or down and up incident to each stroke of the sickle E. This is due to the peculiar connection between the bar F and the lever D, for it will be seen that when the sickle B is at its innermost point the pitman I is in an inclined position and therear end of the lever D is down, and as the sickle moves outwardly the pitman is moved to and past the vertical, with the result that the rear end of lever D is moved up and then down, causing the sickle E at the forward end of the lever to move down and up incident to the outward stroke of sickle B. On the inward stroke of the sickle B the operation described is repeated, with the exception that the sickle E is moved up and then down.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the stroke of the sickle E is very short and that by reason of this and the fact that the knives 19 q are adapted to make shear cuts my improved auxiliary cutting apparatus is calculated to expedite the progress of the machine and render the draft very light even when the vines or grain that are being out are badly tangled.
In service as the machine equipped with my improvements is drawn forward the auxiliary cutting apparatus cuts vertically through the tangled peavines or massed grain, and thereby increases the efficiency of the machine and expedites the progress of the same.
The housing 0, in addition to supporting the lever D, serves to prevent vines, grain, trash, &c., from gaining access to and retarding or otherwise interfering with the movements of the working parts.
\Vhen the conditions are such that it is desirable to use the mowing-machine without my improvements, it is simply necessary to disconnect the bar F from the sickle B and the housing-section e from the cutter-bar A, when the attachment may be readily removed. Likewise when it is adapted to use the attachment it may be quickly applied and connected to the mowing-machine without the employment of skilled labor, which is an important advantage.
I have entered into a detail description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a horizontal cutting apparatus comprising a reciprocatory sickle, a suitable support, a vertically-movable lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the support and having a sickle on its forward arm, an
angular bar having one of its arms connected to the sickle of the horizontal cutting apparatus and its other and outer arm movable in a horizontal guide, and a pitman pivotally connected at one end to the outer arm of the angular bar and having its other end loosely connected with the rear arm of the lever, substantially as specified.
2. In a mowing-machine, the combination of a horizontal cutting apparatus comprising a reciprocatory sickle, a combined housing and support rising from said apparatus and having a vertical series of knives, a vertically-movable lever fulcrnmed at an intermediate point of its length in the housing and having a sickle at its forward end arranged to work alongside the knives on the housing and support, an angular bar connected to the sickle of the horizontal cutting apparatus and extending into the housing, and a connection between said bar and the rear arm of the lever, substantially as specified.
In a mowing-machine, the combination of a horizontal cutting apparatus comprising a reciprocatory sickle, a combined housing and support rising from said apparatus'and having a vertical series of knives, a vertically-movable lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length in the housing and having a sickle at its forward end arranged to work alongside the knives on the housing and support, an angular bar connected to the sickle of the horizontal cutting apparatus and extending into the housing, and a pitman arranged in the housing and pivotally connected at its lower end to the bar, and having its upper end loosely connected with the rear arm of thelever, substantially as specified.
4. An attachment for mowing-machines, comprising a combined housing and support adapted to be detachably connected to the cutting apparatus of a mowing-machine, and having a vertical series of knives, a lever fulcru med at an intermediate point of its length in the housing and support and having an upright sickle at its forward end, an angular bar adapted to be detachably connected to the sickle of a mowing-machine, and a driving connection between said bar and the rear arm of the lever, substantially as specified.
