SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 663,250, dated December 4, 1900.

Be it known that l, FRANK L. ZEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of apparatus embodying the essential features of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section upon plane of line 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an end view of the apparatus; Fig. 4, a transverse section upon plane of line 4 4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a detail view showing means for rotating the reels.
A represents a tank of suitable shape and capacity for containing the scouring or dyeing liquid, which may be introduced and removed by any suitable means, as by the inlet-pipe t' and valve 2" and exit-pipe e and valve 6'.
As shown, the upper reels R are mounted upon the opposite ends of spindles S, resting in bearings 17 upon the longitudinal members 3 5 f of the upper frame F, which latter consists of said longitudinal members f, united at either end by the cross-headsf. Secured to each spindle S is a pinion p, which meshes with a worm-gear w, affixed to the longitudinal shaft L, supported in bearings Z on the cross-headsf of the upper frame F. This shaft L is provided with a gear Z, which meshes with the pinion m upon the powershaft L. It will thus be seen that the rotation of the shaft L will cause the rotation of all of the upper reels R simultaneously. The worm-gearing shown imparts a relatively slow movement to the reels R, which is desirable in the practical operation of the apparatus.
The cross-headsf' of the frame F, when the frame is in its normal position, rest upon the end walls of the tank A. Said crossheads f are formed with recesses f through which project the upper ends of the standards c c, secured rigidly to the lower frame 0, which is essentially like the upper frame F, since it has longitudinal members 0 c, united at either extremity by cross-heads 0 one of which is shown in Fig. 4. The longitudinal members 0 0' have mounted transversely across them the spindles S, upon which the lower reels R are supported. Each of the spindles S is preferably arranged parallel to and in the same vertical plane with the spindles S immediately above it, so that a skein or bank of material may be conveniently slipped over the outer ends of coinciding reels R R. In order to facilitate this action and to afford means of holding the skeins or hanks of material taut during treatment, I make the lower frame 0 adjustable vertically. This I accomplish by forming one of the standards cat each end of the frame 0 with rack-teeth 0 which engage with pinions d on a longitudinal shaft D, which has secured to its outer end a gearwheel D, capable of rotation by the gear g and crank G or any other convenient means. It will thus be seen that the lower frame is practically suspended upon the pinions d and that it may be raised or lowered thereby, as desired.
The uprights c are formed with shoulders 0 (two of which are shown in Fig. 4,) which when the frame 0 is raised sufficiently bear against the lower edge of the upper frame F,
as shown in said Fig. 4, so that the latter may also be raised, together with the lower frame 0, through the medium of the pinions d when desired, asfor the purpose of apply- "ing or removing the skeins or hanks of material to or from the reels R R. Thus supposing both frames to have been raised sufficiently to elevate the lower reels above the liquid in the tank and to admit of the hanks or skeins of material being conveniently slipped over the upper reels R, as well as over the upper reels R, both frames are then lowered through the medium of the shaft D and pinions 01 until the upper frame rests in its normal position upon the end walls of the tank A, the continued lowering of the frame 0 drawing the skeins or hanks of material taut to the required degree when the rotation of the shaft D is stopped. The degree of tension imparted to the hanks or skeins of material is sufficient to cause them to transmit the motion of the upper reels R to the lower reels R,- thereby insuring a continuous rotation of the hanks or skeins over and around said reels and subjecting the mate.- rial evenly and uniformly to the action of the scouring liquid or dye.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The com bination of the tank A,the frame F, consistingof the longitudinal members ff united by the cross-heads f f, said crossheads being formed with the recesses f f the spindles S, S, mounted in bearings upon the longitudinal members f,f, of the frame F and each provided with a central pinion p, the reels R R mounted upon the opposite ends of "said spindles S, S, the central longitudinal shaft L, supported in bearings Z, on the crossheads f, f, a series of worm-gears w, w affixed to said shaft L and each engaging with apinionp, upon one of the spindles S, means for rotating said longitudinal shafts L, the lower frame 0 formed of the longitudinal members a, a, united by the cross-heads c c and having the rigid standards 0, c, projecting through the recesses f f in the upper frame F, the spindles S, S, mounted upon bearings on the longitudinal members 0, c,of the lower frame (J, the reels R mounted upon opposite ends of the spindles S',rack-teeth c ,c ,formed upon one of the standards a, c, at each end of the frame O,pinions engaging said rack-teeth,
