' WITNESSES and I do hereby declare the following to be UNITED STATES WILLIAM C. WRENSCH, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
SECTIONAL NUT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 663,208, dated December 4, 1 900.
Application filed 3 11) 14, 189
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. WRENSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Nuts;
a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to reduce and to a great extent avoid the inconvenience and trouble involved in assembling and dissociating parts in boiler and steam-fitting operations, and especially in connection with steam and hot-water furnaces for house-heating, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved nut and in the arrangement and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure l is a plan of the improved nut. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken on line a: of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail plans of the sections of which the nut is comprised, andFigs. 5 and 6 are side views of the same.
In said drawings, (1 indicates the nut. This comprises a piece of metal centrally perforated and interiorly threaded, as at a to receive a correspondingly-threaded shaft, pipe, or tube. Around the central perforation, at
uniform distances from the center, are six equal sides a", more or less, arranged to lie at equal angles one with another, so that a monkey-wrench may be employed in turning said nut in narrow apertures or spaces, in which the nut may be seated, so that the said wrench may take a new hold on the nut after 9. Serial No. 730,466. (No model.)
each sixth of a turn, more or less, without changing the jaws of said wrench, as will be understood. The not thus constructed and adapted to be operated by the wrench in the usual manner is made in sections 1) c, and the sections are hinged together, as at d, and adapted to be opened to permit the said nut to be placed upon the shaft, bolt, or tube from the side thereof, when the ends of said shaft, bolt, or tube are held by parts which will obstruct the removal of the nut lengthwise of said shaft. The hinge-pin connects said sections b c at one side of the nut, the opposite ends of the sections forming jaws adapted to be opened or separated to permit the shaft, bolt, or tube to enter between to the threaded center. The free ends of said sections are provided with means by which they are securely fastened together with precision, firmness, and strength, so that the threads a of one section will be held in proper correspondence with the threads of the other. The section 0 is recessed or socketed, as at f,
to receive the extremity of the free end of the section b, the walls of one part conforming to those of the other part to effect increased strength of union when the parts are fastened together.
The parts or sections are preferablyjoined together at their free extremities by a screw g, which extends through the tongue h of the section 0 into a threaded hole formed in the section b, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 1.
The nut is operated in connection with the threaded bolt, shaft, or tube by a wrench in any ordinary manner excepting when applied to a bolt or tube having its ends obstructed, as above indicated, when the screw g is removed and the free ends of the nut opened apart to permit the out or in passage of said bolt or tube,when the ends are again fastened together, permitting the nut to be screwed up on the bolt-threads to effect the desired union or fixture of parts.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is The improved out having a central threaded perforation and a series of sides disposed uniformly at equal angles to one another and In testimony that I claim the foregoing I at equal distances from the center of the nut, have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of 10 said nut being in sections hinged together at September, 1899. one side of the axial center of the nut and 5 joined to the opposite side by a screw, one of WILLIAM WRENSCH' the said sections being provided with asocket Witnesses: to receive the extremity of the other section, CHARLES H. PELL, substantially as set forth. O. B. PITNEY.
