TO WHOM IT MAY GOE'CERN:
Be it known' that we, JAMES DEPEU and J. DARRAH HALL, of Pcekskill, in the county of Wcs'tchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Car-Coupling; and we do hereby declare :that the following is afnll, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledtin the art to make and uselhgsnme, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspeciiication.
This invention consists in an arrangement of parts whereby we railroad cars may be automatically coupled together in a safe and'convenient manner, and uncoupled in the most expeditious manner from the side or platform of the car. V
Fig'urelrepresents the draw-heads of two ca-rs coupled together by our improved method, the view being a vertical section through the line a: x of fig. 2. V
Figure 2 is a top-or plan view of the coupling, one draw-head beingshowii in section as through the line yy of fig. 1. V l Similar letters of reference-indicate like parts.
A represents the draw-heads; B is the coupling link; C is a pin which" holds thefback end of the link; D is a. weighted lever'or' ca'tch which is attached to the draw-head by a pivot at a ;'E is a vertical catch-pin which passes down from the top of the dramhead and holds the end of the catch l), when the cars are coupled; as'seen in fig. 1- E is securcdin its place bye smallpin which passes through it, the ends of which work in a. slot in a collar'on the drnw-head,'as seen in the drawing. To uncouple the cars the pin E is raised, which liberates the link, as when not held by E the weighted cndof the lover or catch D'dropsdown by its owngravity andnssnrnes theposition seen in thelet't-hand draw-head A. When the cars are to be coupled and are-comingtogether the link will strike the weightcdlever or catch D, as it stands and is seen in A, the heavy end of D wouidhe' forced up, raising the catch-pin and passingit where the pin will drop down and catch as it is se'elri inl the other draw-head. There is onefeature in our arrangement which'gives it additi nal novelty, and thatfis, .eaclj draw-' head always carries a link, and both links canbensed at the same time, i} desired. Under ordinary circumstances but one link would be used, as scenin fig. 1, and belonging to AU, The link in theother. draw-head would remain as seen, drawn back and held by the coupling-pin C, and resting on the bottom or lower .portion of the recess in the draw-head out of the way; The pin passes through a sleeve marked f, which the link surr roundsyas seen plainly at the right hand of figQZ. c is a shoulder on the pin, which rests upon the top of the sleeve When-the pin is raised so that the collar ,is above the draw-head, it may he slipped forward and dropped through the draw-head in another position, 'as seen in A, fig. 1. This movement carries the link with it, as the link is attached to the sleeve by an eye, as seen. The long slot seen in the topof the draw-head in A fig. 2, allows the pin to pass from one point to the other without taking it from the sleeve. c e are recesses at each end of this slot, upon the bottom ,of whichthe shoulder of .the pin rests. There is a slot in the bottom of the draw-head which allows the end of the weighted lever D to drop down so that it does not interfere with th'e entrance-of the link when the cars are coupling, I
The arrangement of the double linkis a great convenience and safeguard. If a link is broken or lost, as frequently happens on trains coupled in the usual way, our coupling alwayshas a link in reserve placed just where it is wanted. In drawing heavy trains a doubl'e'link is frequently necessary to insure safety. In cases.
* of this kind our coupling is alwaysready for the emergency. What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- L The sleeve 3 which holds the link, and the arrangement by which the 'sleeve' and the coupling-pin Core moved longitudinally in the draw-head, substantially as described. t We claim a coupling with coupling-links and sleeve f arranged in each draw-head, substantially as. described. We claim the weighted lever D and the catch-pin E, in combination with the sleeve 1' and pin 0, arranged. substantially as set forth. l
