SPECIFICATION forming pm of Letters Patent N9. 663,073, date; Dembei 4, 1960. Application filed January 4| 1900. Serial No. 318. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. COUGHTRY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigars, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to cigars.
My object is to improve upon the construction of cigars and prevent the Wrapper from becoming disengaged from the binder, thereby spoiling the cigar.
I have found by experience and practice, and I believe it to be the experience of all persons using cigars manufactured in the usual Way, which consists in first placing the binder upon the filler and then rolling the wrapper onto the binder, that if for any reason the Wrapper becomes broken, either on account of the cigar having become dry or for any other reason, the wrapper peels up and becomes disengaged from the binder and' causes the cigar to leak, and thereby destroys its usefulness. To obviate this, I form a composite Wrapper, which consists of an outer part which corresponds to the wrapper and the inner layer which corresponds to the binder and allows the edges of one to extend beyond the edges of the other, so that when the Wrapper thus formed is Wound helically upon the filler the wrapper or outer layer overlaps the inner part or binder and the two parts which form the wrapper are locked together, and thereby are secured against separation. I have found thatacomposite wrapper constructed and bound upon the filler as above set forth is muchV less liable to break.
The following is a specication of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a top plan of a binder of two members placed one upon the other and both placed upon a wrapper ready to be rolled onto a filler. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. l on line x and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a .partially-finished cigar.
The binder is here shown as consisting of twomembers, A being what I call the primary binder and B the secondary one, each consisting of a piece of leaf-tobacco cut to substantially the form shown and placed one upon the other so that the one will project more or less at different points beyond the other, substantially as shown. These binders are then placed onto the wrapper so that the latter will project at the rear edge andleft-hand end, substantially as shown, and the binders and Wrapper constitute the wrapping. One of the members of the binder can be omitted in some work. A quantity of tobacco is then roughly shaped as a filler D by hand or in any other suitable manner, either with or without a temporary binder, and placed upon the combined binders and wrapper winding, usually upon a line more or less diagonal to the front right-hand corner, and the Wrapper is rolled onto it helically, starting atthe tuck and with suitable laps ending at the head, and when the head is (inished and the tuck cut the cigar is complete.
Vhether the binder consists of one or more members when the first helical Wind of the wrapping is complete on the tuck as the second Wind begins the right-hand edge of the binder will roll onto the lap over onto the lefthandedge of the rst wind of the Wrapper and the right-hand edge of the wrapper will overlap this and lap over onto the binder, and so on as to each wind until the binder is rolled on, and thereafter the Wrapper-winding will make the head. In case the binder consists of two members, at the starting of the second wind the righthand edge of the primary binder will lap over onto the left-hand edge ofthe wrapper, the right-hand edge of the secondary binder will lap over the right-hand edge of the primary binder onto the wrapper, and the right-hand edge of the wrapper will overlap both and lie upon and fit onto the wrapper, whereby the several members of the wrapping overlap and lap o ver each otherand each binds the other at the lap, and the compound lapping makes tight laps free from pockets, and thus insures a good draft to the cigar with no leaky laps. The projection of Veach member of the wrapping at the rear edge beyond each other facilitates the overlapping of the members at the laps and their binding and interlocking, whereby a wrapper cannot be unwound intentionally or accidentally without removing the binder also, and the IOC breaking Aof a, Wrapper Will not destroy the cigar, as is the ease Where a binder is Wound onto the filling and a wrapper is rolled onto that separately. i
What; I claim, and desire to secure by Let-v 13ers Patent, is-
A cigar comprising a filling and a Wrapping consisting of a plurality of layers forming a Wrapper and a binder Wound spirelly around4 the filling all of lche layers of the edge toward the tucked end. of the cigar overlying all of the layers of the edge toward the tip eml thereof, and the outer layer or Wrapper ex-
