SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,055, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed September 14, 1900. Serial No. 30,068. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN J. WEINMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drill-presses, and the improvements relate to the driving-gear between the spindle or drillrod and the main driving-shaft.
The object of the invention is to provide a movable antifriction -bearing for the disk through which the spindle or drill rod is driven, the same having the new and useful features hereinafter described and claimed.
In a detail description of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is an elevation of a portion of the drill. Fig. 2 is a top view of the friction-disk and the bearing, a portion of the disk being broken away to show the balls. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the friction-disk and adj unctive devices.
In a detail description of the invention similar reference-letters indicate corresponding parts. i
A designates an upper portion of the drillframe, in which is mounted horizontally the driving-shaft B, having differential pulleys O and a friction-wheel D.
c is a spindle or drill-rod, to which is rigidly connected a friction -disk E, which is driven from the friction-wheel D. The friction-disk E has a downwardly-projected collar E, which rests upon a series of ball-bearin gs E, which are seated in a ball-race F in the upper end of a movable collar G. Collar G loosely incloses the drill-rod c and has its lower end provided with a cam-surface a.
H designates a socket projection or fixed collar on the drill-frame through which the drill-rod 0 passes. This socket projection has its upper end provided with a matching camsurface a, upon which the cam end of the ballcollar G rests.
Z) is an arm projecting rigidly from the collar G and which forms a handle for the movement of said collar G to raise or lower the balls and the friction-disk E away from contact with the friction-driver D. The arm 1) projects through an oblong opening it in a post H. The lower end of said post H is screw-threaded and projects through a segmental slot I in a segmentplate I and is provided with a thumb-nut J, by means of which the said post is securely attached to the segmentplate. The segment-plate Iis rigidly connected to the s0cket-piece or rigid collar H, or it may be attached to an adjacent portion of the frame A.
As shown in Fig. 1, the friction-disk E is out of contact with the friction-driver D. This occurs when the highest point of the cam-surface on the movable collar is in contact with the lowest point of the cam-surface a on the rigid collar or socket projection H. In order to elevate the friction-disk E and its bearing, the thumb-nut J is loosened and the post H is shifted in the segment-slot I, and therewith the arm I), to move the collar G, the said movement causing the highest point of the cam-surface a on said movable collar to ride upon the cam-surface a on the fixed collar H, whereby-the bearing of the disk E and said disk are elevated to effect a contact between the disk E and driving-wheel D. The thumb-nut Jis then retightened and the disk E rotates 0n the ball-bearing with the drill-rod c.
Having described my invention, I claim In a drill, the combination with a drill-rod, and a friction-disk for driving said rod, of a movable and a fixed collar surrounding said drill-rod below the friction-disk, antifrictionbearing between the friction-disk and the movable collar, cam-surfaces between the movable and the fixed collars, an arm projecting from the movable collar, an upright post inclosing said arm, a rigidly-attached segmental plate having a slot therein through which the said upright post projects, and means for securing said upright post at any position within the slot in said segmental plate, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
