Be it known that I, DAVID HOWELL, of Louisville, Jefferson county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Machine for making Machinists Nuts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This is an improvement in the class of machinesvfor the manufacture of red-hot bars into machinists nutblanks, and my invention relates to the construction and o o-operation of the parts immediately concerned in guiding, severing, shaping, and discharging of the metal.

A is a frame or bed, having guides B B', for sliding heads C and D, and guides E and E', for the sole and crown punches F and G respectively. Fixed immovablyin the frame is the box or die H, by means of which, in conjunction with the sole-punch F, the blank is severed, and within which the blank is pressed, punched, and formed. One side of the die II is formed of a steel plate, I, which co-acts with the sole-punch F to sever the blank by a shearing action.' A gauge-block, J, having an overhanging lip, j, serves as a stop and guide to the inserted bar, and also ,assists to guide the upper and rear sides of the sole-punch F. The bolt which secures the block J traversing a slot, j, enables the adjustment in or out of the 'block for different-sized nuts. Thev sole-punch F is traversed longitudinally by a gradually'increasing aperture,j`, which opens inte a vertical perfoi-ation, c, in the sliding head C for the escape of the wads or punchings. The sole and crown-punches are provided with slots K for the passage of cold water. M is a gauge-block whose oblique flange m holds the plate I to its work. N is a bolt which, being screwed into the frame, serves by depressing the block M to set forward the plate I as it Wears. lThe inner edge of the flange m serves to guide one side of the crown-punch G. The crown-punch G is confined in and guided by guide E', and is traversed longitudinallyuby the round punch O, whiclris secured in the sliding head D, and which during the operation is advanced so as to form the eye of the nut simultaneously with the .act of severance. The crown-punch Gris held against rotation by a feather, g, occupying a corresponding groove in the guide E, but is capable of sliding freely along the eye-punch' O; Bolts L L serve to hold the punches F and O securely within their respective heads. Heads g g on the crown-punch G' limit its advance and return strokes. The vertical perforations c and d in the sliding heads C and D enable the insertion of instruments with which to dislodge ,the punches from the said heads when required to be turned in the headsl or to he reground or replaced by others.V The sole-punch F is reciproeated by a cam, P, rotating in a' yoke, Q, Whose stem R slides in a guide, S, and whose front portion is bolted to the sliding head Cf The eye-punch is reciproeated by a cam, T, whose yoke U is connected by pitmanVwith a rock-arm, W, whose shaft u has a yielding arm, X, composed of a bundle of stout and highly elastic steel plates, and whose outer end is connected by pitman Y with the sliding head D of the eye-punch. Ascrew, c, in the pitman V, enables the lengthening or shortening of the latter. The use of the elasticity of the arm X will appear in the sequel. Z-is an aperture through 'which the bnr is fed.
The operation is as follows: The punches being fully retracted, a bar, whose end has been brought-to a forging hea-t, is inserted in the aperture Z edge up. The-rotation of the cams new advances thel eye and crownpunches to the position shown, and then, the sole-punch being advanced, acts to simultaneously sever the blank, and'crowd-the same into the die and upon the eye-punch, and to squeeze the blankiwith great force against the now stationary crown-punch. The punches then .lnovetogether so as to carry the formed blank over the disi charge opening V1,V and the eye-punch still farther retreating` leaves the blank at liberty to drop from the machine. In case `of a Wad or Yblank sticking or failing to escape, the elasticity of the arni X relieves the parts and preventsfracture. After the completion of each blank, the bar should be turned over edge for edge, in order that both of the cut sides of the nut may flare downward or from crown to sole.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- In the described combination with the die H and punches F, G and O, I claim adjustable guide-blocks J and M, for the purposes explained.
