Be it known thatl, VERNON F. PRENTICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement irl-Radial Drilling- Machines, of which the following is aspeciication, accompanied bydrawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a drilling-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a front View of the rotating head in which the spindle is supported.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts in the dierent figures.
The object of my present invention is to provide a radial drilling-machine in which the cutting-tool shall be capable of four independent adjustments-viz., first, an adjustment around a vertical axis; second, a sliding adjustment in a vertical plane; third, a sliding adjustment in a horizontal plane, and, fourth, an adjustment around a horizontal axis; and I attain this object by means of the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a vertical post supported upon a suitable base or bed plate 2. Upon the post 1 is mounted a rotating sleeve 3, capable of turning upon a vertical post and provided with ways 4 4, upon which is a carriage 5, ca-
pable of' a vertically-sliding movement Ion said ways by means of connected actuating mechanism, as hereinafter described. The carriage 5 is provided with horizontal ways b', which support the radial arm 7, upon the outer end of which is mounted a head 8, capable of rotating about a horizontal axis and supporting the rotating drill-spindle 9 and connected feeding mechanism, as hereinafter described. n
Journaled within the post 1 and concentrically with the rotating sleeve 3 is a vertical shaft 10, driven near its lower en'd by a pair of beveled gears 11 and 12 from a horizontal counter-shaft 13, which is provided with the usual step-pulley 14 and back gearing 15. To the upper end of the upright central shaft I attach a gear 16, engaging a journaled in the radial arm 7.

The beveled gear 19 engages a beveled gear 20 on a short intermediate shaft 21, journaled in the vertically-sliding carriage 5. The intermediate shaft 21 carries a spur-gear 22, engaging a spur-gear 23, which is provided with a long hub 24, journaled in the carriage 5 and having a spline connection with a horizontal shaft 25, which is journaled in the radial arm 7.
The outer end of the horizontal shaft 25 carries a beveled pinion 26, which engages a beveled gear 27, having a spline connection with the drill-spindle 9, journaled in the head 8, whereby the rotary motion of the countershaft 13 is communicated to the drill-spindle. Turning upon a stud 2S, supported by the framework forming the head S, is a cone-pulley 29, having an attached beveled gear 30, which is driven by the beveled gear 27.
The cone-pulley 29 has a belt connection with a cone-pulley 3l,attached to a short horizontal shaft, which carries a pinion 32, engaging a beveled gear 33 on an upright shaft 34. The shaft 34 carries a beveled pinion 35 at its lower end, engaging a beveled gear 36 on a horizontal shaft 37, which extends back of the, drill-'spindle 28 and carries a worm 38, engaging a worm-wheel 39 on a vertical shaft 40, having at its upper end a spur-gear 41, which is in mesh with a gear 42, attached to a rotating nut 43, journaled in the head 8 and held from longitudinal movement. The nut 43 engages the feed-screw 44, having a swivel connection iu the usual manner with the drill-spindle 28, so that the rotary motion of the drill-spindle will communicate a feeding motion to the screw 44 and connected drillspindle through the intermediate mechanism above described.
Upon the outer end of the radial arm 7, and preferably integral therewith, is a circular worm-wheel 45, concentric with the shaft 25, A worm 46, journaled in and carried by the head S, engages the teeth of the worm-wheel 45 and is provided with an angular shank to receive a Wrench by which the worm 46 is rotated, causing the head S to be rotated around the IOO worm-wheel 45. The head 8 is held against the stat1onary=wormwheel 45 rby means of bolts, whose heads are held in a circular T- shaped slot 48, concentric with the axis of the shaft 25.
A horizontal sliding motion is given to the radial arm 7 by means of a screw 49, jour naled at one end in a bearing 50, attached to the radial arm and held from longitudinal movement in said bearing, and having its opposite and screw-threaded end engaging a nut 51, held bya bracket 52, attached to theA vertically-sliding carriage 5. The screw 49 is actuated by miter-gears 53 and a spindle 54, having a shank 55 to receive a wrench.
The sliding carriage 5 is moved vertically on the ways 4 4byn1eans of a screw 56, engaging a nut 57, attached to the carriage. `The screw 56 is `jonrnaled in and held from longitudinalmoveinent by a bearing 58, attached to therotating sleeve 3. The fupper end ofthe. screw 56 carries a spur-gear 59 in mesh with a-'pinion 60,. rotating uponsa' studhel-d in a vibratng'lever61,-which ispivoted concentricallywith the screw 56. Thevibrat inglever llalsocarries a pinion 62, lrotating upon a stud held in the lever similar to and in engagement with the pinion 60, but not in engagement with 4gear 59, which is attached to the screw 56. 'By vibrating t-hev lever 61v onel of the pinions 60 or 62is carried into engagement with the pinion 63, attached tothe-1o tating shaft 18; but when the lever 6l isheldl in acentral position both pinions 60 -and621 are held out of engagement with the driving-A pinion 63. When the pinion 60 is Y carried. into engagement with the pinion 63, the screw 56 willbe rotatedin one direction vby the driv-` ing-pinion 63 through the intermediate pinion 60; but when the pinion 62 is carried into engagement with the pinion 63 the screw.

through the intermediate pinions 62 and 60.v The Vibrating'lever 61 is moved into either of the three positions named above by means'y of a vertical shaft 64, journaled in bearingsA at the side of the rotating sleeve 3 and car-f rying at its upper end a radial arm 65, connected by a link 66 with the outer end of the lever 6l. The shaft 64 is rocked by'means of a handle 67, attached to the shaft and carry-` ing a spring-actuated latch 68, engaging one of a. series of three holes arranged in a fixed` plate 69, concentric with the axis of the roclz-i ing' shaft 64, thereby locking theshaft in po-ll sition. The head 8fis provided with a profy jecting handle 70,- whichenables the attend-` ant to rotate the sleeve 3 and swing the radial arm around the axis of the Vertical shaft 10.
.For ordinary purposes the sleeve 3 is leftg free tobe rotatedl on the post 1 by means of the handle 70; but when required the sleevej is clamped` upon the post by means of one or more clamping-bolts, one of which is shown at 71, having a head 72 at one end and a nut 73 at the opposite end and extending through the sleeves 74 and 75, held in the rotating sleeve 3 and are concave on one side, as at 76, to fitth'e convex side of the post l. A small space 77 is left between the inner ends of the sleeves to allow them to be drawn together and clamped against the post, thereby tight` ening the rotatable sleeve 3.
What I claim as myinventiorn'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In la-radial drilling-machine the combination of a supporting-post, a sleeve held on said post and capable of rotation about a vertical aXi-s and provided with vertical ways, a carriage capable of sliding on `said ways,said carriagehaving horizontal ways, a radi-al arm capable of sliding in saidhoriz'ontal ways, a
head supported by the end of said radial` arm and capable of'rotating about afhorizontal axis,.and a rotating drill-spindle journaled in said head, substantially as described.
2. In a radial drilling-machine, the combination of a su p po-rtin g-post, a rotatable sleeve journaled on said post andfprovided with vertical Ways, acarriagecapable of sliding on said ways, said `carriage having horizontal Ways, an arm capable of sliding on'said horizontalways, head carriedl by said arm and 'capable of rotating about a-horizontal axis and a rotating drill-spindle carried bysaid arm and with the axis of saiddrill-spindle in .a plane at an angle with the horizontal axis of its rotating head,substantiallyas described.
3. In a radial.drilling-machine, the combination of a vertical post, a sleeve rotatable on said post, a carriage capable of a'vertical movelnent on said sleeve, a radial arm held by said carriage and capable of a radial movement thereon, a head supported #by the end of said arm and capable of yrotating in a plane at right-angles to the radial movement of said .arm,and a-drill-spin'dle journaled-in said head, 4substantially as described.
