PACKING-BOX.
smcmwms forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,329, dated November e, 1eoo. Application filed August 18, 1900- Sezial No. 27,257. (No modeLl T0 (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of I-Iolyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in packing-boxes and clamps or retainers therefor, the objects being to provide simplified and improved means for setting up the packing as occasion requires, to provide against the accidental displacement or loss of the packing-gland, and to permit readily the removal, if desired, of the gland for renewing the packing.
The invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which the improved device is illustrated, and in which Figure is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the body, through which the shaft or piston-rod B plays or has its bearing, said part B constituting,
.for example, the head of a steam-cylinder or of a pump.
The body A is constructed with the concentric annular seat a at the base of the annular depression I), in which is placed the packing d, of any suitable compressible material, the same, however, not filling the an- I nular depression-spacel v 0 represents the gland, having at its upper end the surrounding flange g.
D represents a clamp and easing, the same consisting of the two matching or duplicated half-cylindrical shells or castings h h, with opposite pairs of ear-lugs i t' for the engagement therethrongh and therewith of the clamping-boltsjj and nuts j j and having comparatively narrowinternal flangem to engage under the flange of the body A and the wider internal upper or opposite end flange n to embrace the piston-rod or shaft.
It will be noted that the axial length of the gland is greater than the distance from the upper end of the body A to the inner wall of the flange n, so that same lower end portion of the gland must necessarily be sunk within the month of the depression.
Setting-up screws 0 0 are provided and passed, with a thread engagement, through the upper flanged portions 91, of the separable clamp-casing D to a forcing and retaining bearing against the upper flanged end of the gland. These screws provide the means for forcing the gland in an eudwise direction against the packing as occasion may require.
It will be perceived that with theinclosing clamp in place about the gland, the end of which latter is sunk within the depression I), the gland cannot become entirely disengaged from the body A, having such depression, no matter to What extent the screw 0 may become loosened, and yet to replace the packing, necessitating the removal of the gland, such may be done by the easilyaccomplished removal of the separable clam ping-case D. The casing conceals and protects the gland and measurably excludes dirt from the bearing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the cylinder head or body, through which the piston-rod or shaft works, provided with the flange g, and having an endwise open annular packingdepression, of the annular gland, the end portion of which is entered in said depression, the clamping-casing consisting of separable semicylindrical sections, 71 h, with the internal flanges m n the former to engage under said flange g and the latter to embrace the shaft outside of the gland, means of detachable connection for said clamp-sections, and the settingup screws passing the clamp -seclion flanges a to bearing against the end of the gland, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with the body A, comprising a pump or cylinder head, or the like and having the flange g, and the annular depression for packing, of the annular gland O the end of which enters said depression, the clamp D comprising the paired semicylin-- drical sections h it having the matching earlugs t '1), and the inturned semi-annular flanges the gland, the bolts j and nuts j engaged Signed by me at Springfield, Massachusetts, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ROBERT THOMPSON,
m and 'n, the distance between the inner faces of said flanges being less than the length of through, and With, said ear-lugs 2', and the setting-up screws 0 0, threading through the Witnessesi clamp-section flanges against the outer end WM. S. BELLOWS, of the gland. E. M. KNIGHT.
