SPECIFICATION fomi'ng parier Letters Patent Ns. eo,5s4. dated october so, tooo.
Application am smet?? s, 1899." sean No. '136.355. n maar .To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that. I, WILLIAM F. NORMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding and having 4my post-oilice address atV Thompsonville, in the county of Hartford and` State of Connecticut, have'invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Cutters, of which the following is a description, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side view of a pipe-cutterembodying said improvement. Fig. E. is a view in horizontal .cross-section on the plane de-4 noted by the dotted line Je w. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section on the plane denoted by the dotted line y y. Fig. 4 is a View in vertical section on the plane denoted by the dotted line s z.
The object of the improvement is the pro- The letter'b denotes cheeks or bosses 'on the' inside ofthe mortise b, which naturally leaves these cheeks with rather rough surfaces. These surfaces are preferably tinished--by introducing between them a piece' of steelto serve as a temporary doublefaced anvil and then submitting the body-'piece at these portions to the concussion or pressure of adrop or the like, after which the piece of steel which has served as an interior anvil is removed, the operation being one that gives these cheeks a smooth surface for 'operating against the sidesof the stationaxyvcutters.
i The latter, as shown, arehighly-tempered steel wheels with flat-ended hubs and sharp cutting edges, and each is journaled on-a. screw c', whose cylindrical body passes through one boss'and across themortisemhile its tipl is reduced and threaded into the other It has cast boss, a construction which avoids projecting ends and aiords asmooth bearing `for-the hub ofthe cutter between the cheeks.
The letter d denotes a socket cast in the body-piece. It is preferably cylindrical, 'as shown in Fig. 2, because a socketlof tha shape is the most easily made.
`in cross-section, a matter of form that is referred to hereinafter in the claims by the wordspolygonal-surfaced. Thispolygonal shape is necessary in order to guide the movable cutter in its longitudinal movements in its sheath.
The letter f denotes the sheath of the Inovl able cutter-carrier It is of soft metal (prac` tically Babbitt metal) cast in place in the socketA d and around the movable cntter-car 4 rier, while the cuttercarrier is held in care- It is screw-threaded, and that thread takes into a corresponding thread in the body-piece.
It has a groove g' near the upper end Where that end projects longitudinally into the lowerV end of the movable cutter-carrier, and a pin h, borne by the cutter-carrier, projects into that groove', an arrangement vwhich makes the operating-handle longitudinally fasti'to the movable cutter-earring but enables the handle to rotate independently thereof.A
l claim as my improvementl. In combination; the cast bodypiece having cast therein the mortise for the two 'Staf tionary cutters and the cylindricalsocketfor the sheath of the inova'ble 'cuttercarrier; the two stationary cutters rotar-ily hung in the mortise therein; the movable polygonabsurfaced cuttercarrier considerably smaller exteriorly than the interior diameter of said socket; the cutter rotarily hung in the movablecutter-carrier; the sheath of soft metal around the polygonal movable cutter-carrier while that carrier is` held in alnement with a point between the two stationary cutters;`
cast within the Socket'i the body-Piece and Y y` Ico I i and the screw-threaded operating-handle takv substantallyas escrbed `d for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, the cast.;` body-pece her# in'gcast therein the mortse CV-sbapcd in crosssecton a'nd the socket for the sheath ofi-hey Vmovable cutter-carrier, said mortise. being provided 'with fiat cheeks surfaced by concussion or pressre; two wheel cutters with flat-ended hubs journaled in said mortisebetween the cl'leks thereof; the cutter rotarly hg in themovable cutter-carrier; folie sheath of soft mefl wthntheV socket and screw-threaded operating-,handle taking into a corresponding thread in the body-*piece and i 5 madelongtudinay, but not rotarly, fastto the-'movable cutter-carrier; all substantially as describedand'for the purposes set'fforth.l
