Unirse STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. C. JONES, OF GIBSON CITY, ILLINOIS.
EGGBEATER AND CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,513, dated October 23, 1900.
' Application nea July 12,1900. serai No. 23,395. uio modela T0 all whom, zit ntaty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. O. JONES, acitizen of the United States, residing at Gibson Oity, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Egg-Beaters and Ohurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined eggbeater, cream-whipper, and churn; anditconsists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide beating and whipping mechanism especially designed for use in connection with an ordinary screw-top fruit-jar, whereby the jar may be utilized as a body or casing to hold the cream or eggs; also, to provide mechanism of this character which will effectually retain the screw-top of the jar in place and which is simple in construction and adapted to perform its work speedily and efficiently.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a beating and whipping device embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a fruit-jar for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout both views, the numeral 1 represents a fruitjar of the Mason or a similar type provided with a screw-threaded neck 2 to receive the screw-cap or closure 3. My invention contemplates the provision of beating or whipping mechanism whereby a fruit-jar of this character may be utilized as a casing, body, or receptacle for the eggs or cream and the screw-cap held in fixed position thereby on the neck of the jar.
The beating and whipping mechanism comprises an open frame 11, provided at its lower end with a series of radial arms 5, extending outwardly and downwardly and carrying at their lower ends a coupling collar or ring 6.
The inner faces of these arms and the inner face of the coupling-ring are formed with an guiar projections 7, constituting threads adapted to engage the grooves 8, formed in the cap, and the threads on the neck to retain said frame in position on the jar. The collar or ring 6 is of a size to snugly embrace the lower end of the cap and engage the screw-v threads of the neck, while the radial arms are adapted to snugly embrace the sides of the cap tohold it in position to close the mouth of the jar and prevent spattering and escape of the contents. The upper right angular ends of the radial arms and base portion of the frame rest upon the top of the cap and the angular projections 7 engage the grooves thereof, and by this means the frame is firmly and securely supported, while the cap is held against vertical displacement. The frame is applied and removed by a rotary movement, as will be readily understood. The frame is provided at bottom and top with alined bearings 9 and 10, in which are mounted a short hollow shaft 11 and a longer shaft l2, the latter projecting through said hollow shaft. These shafts project through a perforation in the cap 3 and carry pinions 13 and 14;, which mesh with a gear-wheel 15, mounted upon the side of the frame. This gear-wheel 15 is provided with a knob or handpiece 16, and by rotating the same motion is imparted through the medium of the pinions 13 and 14 to rotate said shafts 11 and 12 in reverse directions. The hollow shaft 11 carries at its lower end a cross-head 17 and the shaft 12 carries at lits lower end a corresponding supplemental cross-head 18, which is relatively shorter than and is arranged below said head 17, and these heads rotate with the shafts in reverse directions. To the ends of the head 17 on opposite sides of j the head 18 are secured the free ends of looped or elongated U-shaped outer beaters 19. These beaters 19 are formed of spring metal and project downwardly and dare outwardly in reverse directions. The object of so constructing the outer' beaters is to adapt them to be pressed inward, so as to pass through the narrow neck of the jar and then to expand to occupy at their lower ends nearly the entire internal area of the jar. Y By this means an effective rotary and independent vbratory beating action is secured roo throughout a wide area. To the head 18 are secured the free ends of a double looped or reverse double U shaped central beater'20, comprising a continuous piece of spring metal bent to form downwardly-projecting outer arms 21 and an upwardly-projecting intermediate looped portion 22, formed by the connected arms 23. Each pair of arms 21 23 of this central beater flare or diverge, so as toform vibratory Whipping or beating members having a large working area.
I-n the practical operation of the invention the device is applied by compressing the free ends of the beaters 19 20, so as to adapt them to pass through the neck 2 of the jar 1, and then the frame and screw-cap are connected to the neck in the manner set forth. Upon passing the neck the beaters expand or distend so as to cover a large portion of the internal area of the jar. By noW operating the gear-Wheel 15 the beaters 19 20 Will be revolved in reverse directions, and their construction and relative arrangement are such that as each beater cuts through and Whips or beatsup the cream or eggs it throws the same into the path of the other beaters and at the same time vibrates rapidly, whereby rapid beating or Whipping of the eggs or cream is effected.
The peculiar construction of the beaters is advantageous in that it secures aWider range of Working surface than ordinarily and yet at the same time provides for a rapid and ei"- fective independent vibratory action of each of its members.
The mode of removing the device Will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
The device may also be effectively employed as a churn, the jar in this case taking the place of the ordinary churn body or casing.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made Within the scope of the invention Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the adv-an; tages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as nenT and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. In a beating and Whipping appliance for attachment to jars closed by screw-caps, the combination, With a jar provided with a cap having a perforation therein, of a beating and Whipping appliance comprising a frame, a ring or band embracing the screw-cap of the jar, radialarms bearing upon the cap and connecting the frame and ring, said ring and arms being provided With projections to engage the threads of the cap, beaters mounted in the frame, and means in connection with the beaters through the perforation in the cap for operatin g said beaters, substantially as set forth.
2. In a beating and Whipping appliance for attachment to jars closed by screw-caps, the
combination, with a jar provided with a cap having a perforation therein, of a beating and Whipping appliance comprising a frame, a ringer band embracing the base of the flange of the cap, a series of horizontal arms projecting radially from the base of the frame and bearing upon the top of the cap and having downtnrned ends connected to the ring so as to bear upon the upper portion of the iange of the cap, said ring and downturned ends of the arms being provided with projections to engage the threads of the flange of the cap, beaters mounted in the frame, and means in connection with the beaters through the perforation in the cap for operating said beaters, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
