Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAVID HAM- IL'ION, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Campsie View, Bearsden, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
-This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to Water-tube boilers, the object of the invention being to oheapen and simplify the manufacture of such boilers by dispensing Awith the usualcrossLboxes connecting the tube-headers with the steam and water drum and with the necessity for sinuw ous-shaped headers for staggering the watertubes to direct the fire-gases in a sinuous course among these.
The appended drawings, together with the following specification, fully describe the nature and object of my invention.
Figure l of the drawings isa sectional View, taken lengthwise,of a boiler constructed with the above-mentioned object. Fig. 2 is a seotional view similar at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View similar to Fig?, but showing a slightly-different method of directing the tire-gases in a sinuous course among the water-tubes. Fig. 4 is a sectional View, to a larger scale, laken across the steam and water drum, showing the method of connecting the headers with the dished portions of the steam and water drum in a boiler having nine sections of tubes in the Width of the boiler. Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views to Fig. 4, but showing only eight and six sections of tubes, respectively, in the width of the boiler. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the hand-hole fittings. Fig. 8 is a View, to a larger scale, showing the method of joining and butt-strapping the drum at the dished portion of the same.

Thus in a boiler having six sections of tubes in its width, as shown at Fig. 6, the four central nipples C extend in straight lines from the dished portion of the drum A to the headers D, and the outer nipples at either side are expanded through the curved drum-shell, at right angles thereto, being irst bent in order that they may enter their headers D at the proper angles. By the method ofconneeting the nipples O to the creased horizontalportion B' and the curved portion of the drum-v shell A the outer bent nipples are rendered more accessible than the outer nipples in any outwardly-dished cross-box, and in order to4 admit of the dishing of the steam and Water drum shell A being done in a thorough practical manner those portions of the shell at the frontand rear which are to be dished are each made of two plat-es, buttstrapped at their meeting ends, as shown particularly at Fig. 8. Referring to that portionof my invention .relating to the shape of the headers D, I make these of rectangular cross-section and straight throughout their length instead of sinuous, as heretofore practiced, thus dispensing-with the necessity for using collapsible mandrels and avoiding thel expense and waste of `time in manipulation entailed by such. mandrels, and in order to direct the tire-gases among the water-tubesE in a sinuous course I place at intervals in the manner shown at Figs. 2 and 3 over these watertubes E fire-bricks F, extending lengthwise of the water-tubes, which act as bailes and have the effect of rows of tubes connected in sinuous-shaped headers.
