To aZZ whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, FERNANDO O. JAQUES, J r.,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lathe Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This inven tion has reference to an improvement in tools used by machinists in lathes and other machines, and it is particularly applicable for cutting screws.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction and the combination of parts whereby the tool, having a series of cut= ting members radially disposed around a common center, is supported on the holder, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a top viewof the holder and the cutter-tool secured in the holder. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of the tool and part of the holder. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the tool; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the tool-holder,'showing the recess into which part of the tool enters.
Similar marks of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a indicates the shank of the tool-holder, adapted to be secured in a standard in the usual manner, and b a U- shaped bracket extending from the end of the shank a and terminating in the arm 0, forming the support of the tool d. The tool has the central, preferably square, body d, from which extend ribs, the ends of which form the cutters d radially, and preferably one cutter, from the center of each of the four sides of the body 61. The body (1 has a central hole 61 extending through the longitudinal axis of the tool, having a central contracted portion to form shoulders on which the head of the screw-post c bears. The screw-post is secured in a hole in the arm 0 by the nut 0 The nut may be omitted and the screw-post secured by screw-thread engagement in the arm 0. When the tool is used for cutting the thread into screw-spindles or a screw-thread into other cylindrical parts, the cutters d are placed obliquely to the axis of the cutters. The arm 6 of the U- shaped bracket I), connected with the toolsupporting arm 0, is provided with the slot b into which the cutters d fit with a close sliding fit.
In securing the tool one of the cutters d is placedinto the slot 12 and in the preferred form the flat side of the square central body 01 of the tool on each side of the cutter d bears firmly on'the face of the arm I), the end of the cutter resting on the supporting-arm c. The screw-pin is now inserted into the central hole 61 of the cutter and secured.
In the preferred form of the tool cl (shown in the drawingslfour cutters are provided. When one cutter has become worn, one of the other cutters may take its place, and when all the cutters on one end of the tool are worn the tool can be reversedand the four cutters on the opposite end of the tool may .be successively used. When all the cutters are worn, the tool is ground across the ends in a suitable grinder, and thereby all the cutters restored. The central hole d in the tool may, for most uses, be of uniform diameter, closely fitting the screw-post c, the head of which may then bear on the upper surfaceoft-he tool. By this construction the tool is firmly supported close to the vertical arm I).
Having thns described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a lathe-tool, the combination with a holder, of a tool having a square central body perforated lengthwise through the center, cutters projecting from the four fiat sides of the central body, and a screw-post for securing the tool to the post, as described. I
2. A lathe-tool having a square, central body perforated lengthwise through the center, and cutters projecting from the flat sides of the central body, whereby both ends of all the cutters may be used successively, as described.
3. In a lathe-tool, the combination with a tool-holder having a projecting tool-supporttel-s may be inserted into the slot in the vertical end of the holder and the tool secured to the supporting-arm of the holder close to the vertical end, as described.
4. A lathe tool having a longitudinally perforated, central body and radiallyprojecting ribs extending the length of the central body, the ends of which form the cutting edges of the tool whereby the cutters on both ends maybe successively used and reground, IO as described.
