SPRING CULTIVATOR-HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,276, dated October 23, 1900.

Be it known that I, MILTON K. NOAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in 'Spring Oultivator Hoes, of which the following is aspeciiication.
My invention has relation to improvements in that class of cultivators that by means of a spring and connected mechanism are held with sufiici'ent rigidity to dig and move the earth, but are so arranged that they will yield on encountering a firm resistance, as a stone er root, and thus avoid breaking the machine, and will assume their position on passing the obstacle.
The object of my invention is to produce a new and improved article of the class designated that shall be simple in construction, efficient in operation, and in which the angle of the yielding joint shall have means for adjustment to adapt the hoe to soils of dierent degrees of firmness.
To the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafrer described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in.which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different. views, Figure 1 is a side' elevation of my improved cultivator-hoe in its normal position, and Fig. 2 a like View showing the hoe yielding to pass an obstacle.
Referring to the figures, 1 is the draw-bar, which is of I-bar steel, of a comlnon form of construction, to which is securely attached an inclosing plate 2, having a rearwardly-extending arm that has a cup 3 to hold the lower end of a spiral spring 4 and a downwardlyprojecting` lug 5 to aiford a support for the fulcrum-pivot 6.
The hoe-blade 7 is adjustably secured to a shank 8, extending from an inclosing extension 9, pivotally connected with the lower end of the draw-bar l. The extension 9 has rearwardly-projecting lugs 10, in which is pivotally mounted a short connecting-rod 11, with its upper end pivotally connected with a lever 12, pivoted on the lug 5. The opposite half of the lever 12 is pivotally connected with a bolt 13, that passes .through the spring 4 and bears at its upper enld a cap that rests on the spring and is secured by a nut. The
vlever 12 has a short plate 14, extending at a sion 9 and its shank in alinement With-the lower end of the draw-bar. The connectingrod 1,1 and lever 12 are slightly bent to the front at their joint, the degree of departure from a true line of these parts being regulated,l
as before stated,by the bolt 15,so that the parts will retain their position against ordinary resistance. When the hoe encounters an obstacle offering resistance that might break the parts, the joint between the rod 11 and lever 12 yields and allows the hoe to swing backward, as shown in Fig. 2, unt'il the obstacle is passed.
Having thus described my invention, what iI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spring cultivator-hoe, the combination with the draw-bar, of a rearwardly-extending arm adapted to support a coiled spring, a spring mounted thereon a rod within said spring adapted to compress the same and connected with one end of a pivoted lever, a shovelbearing v extension pivoted to rock backward, a rod connecting said extension and the opposite end of said lever, and an adjustin g-screw to regulate the angle between said lever and rod, substantially as shown and described.
