IMPROVBMET IN nonna' reno-WATER nBGULATons TO WHOM IIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CARLOS H. GOULD, of Cincinnati, Hamilton countyfOhio, have invented a new and `useful Feed-Water Rc'gulator for-Steam Boilers; and I hereby declare the following to. b'e a full, clear, and
exact description of thc nature, construction, and operation of iny invention, reference being had to the accom.
panying drawings, making part' of this specification.
My invention relates to an automatic device forinsnring constant and equal supply ot" water iii-n, steam Figure 1 is a perspective vien of an apparatus embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a top vien of tlierotatin'g stem with the enclosing sleeve in horizontal section,v A is a tube or sleeve having a screw-thread a, adapting it to bescrewed fast within the shell B of any suitable boiler or stetini'generator. y 'occupying the sleeveA isa cylindrical sha-ft, C, which, in vthe* operation,
has a slight'circular reciprocation about its`z't`xis. The inner end a. of the sleeve is ground accurately at right angles to-its axis, to forni a. scat for the similarly ground hub '1), 'of the stem E, of a float F, 'which iioat is preferably ahollow cylinder of brassor copper, adapted to iloat horizontally upon the surface oi' the Water; In order to enable Vthe sleeve'to be entirely clear of the rater while this iioat is partially-submerged, the stem E is bent downward 'and again outward in the mannerjhown. A screw-cap, G, and Shilling-box, H, surrounding the shaft C, outside ofthe boiler, serve to prevent the escape of any steam that may penetrate the ground `joint-a.. The outer end of the stem (l has a lever, I, proVidednith an adjustable Weight or counterpoise, J. The lever I has a .ferticalperforation, i, to receive the sci 'oiwtlneaded portion c of a rod, K, having nuts, L L', by which the said rod is adjusted tco'r secured in a higher or Vl'owor position. The rod Ktcrminatcs in a foot, M, whose depresssion acts to close a diaphragm, N, of caoutchouc o r other suit-'ably flexible and impervious material, upon the mouth of a pipe, O, which leads from the water supply Q, eithcrtothe feed-Water pump or directly to the boiler,
Y as the case may be. A salud?, 'scrcnrinror down upontlie outer or supplypipe, Q, and'having an interior boss, '21, serves the several purposes of` fasteninr the diaphragm N, guiding the lower extremity of the rod K, and of presentingby its said boss @la solid support or abutment for the buck of the diaphragm in its elevated or open position. i
It will be seen that a subsidence of the floatoperates by temporarily elevating the rod K to remove the pressure from the top ci' the diaphragm so as to permit the passage' ot' the feed Water.. .It is also apparent that my 'slightly rotated shaft C is subjected to a very small fraction of` the friction that cucumbers the movement of and is an element of danger and uncertainty .in the customary sliding stem. The oblong horizontal form of the float` secures an ample buoyant force, with ,slight vertical play, andenables it to'c'o-act effect-cally with thc weighted lever I to overcome the vpressure ofthe supply Waterand the'slight friction ofthe turning shal'tC. .l
The power of the float inside of the boiler is made instrumental to indieateupon the lever outside the exact condition and quantity of the water, and the adjustability ofthe countarb'alanc'e enables the rectification of any excess or dcticicncyof buoyancy in the float. 'V The rod K, being entirely .isolated from the water space, and
therefore unoneumberedby the friction of a packeilfjoint, opposes no "peidtwsptible resistance to the above.`
described automaticdnovement, and the periphery ci'th'e rotating shaft being only three-eighths to half :in inch from the axis, while the rbd' K is tivo to three inches therefrom, the inoveinent'of snijd periphery does not exceed one thirtyfsecond of an inch to give all the opening needed, and consequently there' b ebut slight resistance and no chance for'faluiie in its operation. The certain andy automatic nature of thi device renders it especially applicable to such steam generators as are nsed in warehouses and other' places lacking a regular engineer.
I claim` herein as new andrei' my invention'- i i 1. The reciprocatingA rotary shaft 0,'traversing the boiler side within a suitable horizontal sleeve, A, and provided with-a linut, E, inside of thcboiler, and adjustably weiglited leven): outside of the boiler,' in combinal tion with the adjustable rod K, 4and valve-guarded water-supply pipe, substantially as setforth.
2. I claim the arrungementrof rod K, bossed cap P, diaphragm N, and water-supply pipe Q, foi'lthe purpose combination dith-the rod K and vdiaphragm stop N.'
