E GULTIVATOR.
I Patented June '18, 1867.

GEORGE W. COOPER, OF OGEEOHEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES V. JONES, OF HERNDON, GEORGIA.
Letters Patent No. 65,877, dated June 18, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN RIGE OULTIVATOR.
(the gdgehule marsh in in this: Eaters fitted in making and at fin sans.
. TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it'known that I, GEORGE W. COOPER, of Ogcechee, in the county of Scriven, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Rice Cultivator; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention; r r In this invention three objects are attained: first, the width of the plough is adjustable; second, the manner of fastening the teeth impairs the strength of the beam less than in ordinay ploughs; third, the shape of the teeth renders them less liable to break than are those of the common plough or cultivator. In the drawings- -A is the centre beam; 13 B, the side beams; C C, the handles; D D, thefront plough-teeth, strengthened by d (1, braces, running back from the heel of the plough-teeth to the beams A. B B E E E E, the middle teeth bent outward and backward, and attached to the beams A B B in pairs, each tooth by two bolts fastened by nuts 0 c a c, and situated obliquely with reference to the grain of the wood OfWlllCil the beam is composed. R R, the rear teeth; F F F F, braces running from the topof the side beams 13 B to thctop of the centre beam A, one pair, F F, at the front end, and one pair, F F, at the rear end of the plough; and G G, two braces "running from the draw-beam to the front ends of the side beams]! B. In the two pairs of braces F F F F, one brace in each pair overlaps the other at the centre beam, where the fastening bolt passes through the ends tr both. A series of holes, fff f, in'the braces through which the bolt f of the centre beam may pass enables me to regulate the width of the plough at pleasure, and to adjust it either to the cultivation of rice, orof corn, tobacco, cotton, or any other crop. It may housed for cultivating three rows of rice at once, or by detaching the side pieces B B, it will be adapted to the cultivation of a single row at a-time.
It is evident 'that by properly adjusting the braces F F F F, the teeth D D E E R R maybe made to assume any desired position in relation to each otherand to the centre beam A. By this means the plough can be adjusted to any width of row, and the ploughs made to move the earth either to or from the growing crop, as the ploughman may desire. The backward inclination and curve of the teeth E E R R give them more elasticity, and prevent their being thrown out of place or bent by obstructions, and at the same time enable them to crush the clods with more case, and render them less liable to clog and more easily cleaned when clogged. The manner I, of fastening the middle teeth to the beams by means oftwo bolts situated obliquely to the grain of the wood and clamping the teeth to the beam inpairs, one tooth on each side, greatly diminishes the risk of splitting the beam, inasmuch as it divides the wrenching force of the tooth, expending it upon two parts of the beam rather than concentrating it at a single point. The rear teeth R R are fastened by single perpendicular bolts running up through the beams, by means of which the teeth have a lateral motion, enabling them to escape obstruction. Ilaving thus-described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- ,1. The combination and arrangement of the braces F F F F, the beams A B B, and the braces G G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The method, above described, of fastening the teeth E E E to the beams by two bolts situated obliquely to the grain of the wood, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The inclining and bending of the cultivator teeth E E outward and backward from the point of attach- I ment to the beam A B B, substantially asiand for the purpose described.
To the above specification of my improvcmentI have signed my hand this 30th day of March, 1867.
' GEORGE W. COOPER.
