JOHN A. BASSETT, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 65,866, dated June 18, 186
fitlp fitlgehule nfureh to in flgesc Esters fitted mm muting m of the-same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BASSETT, of Salem, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Hydrocarbon Fluid for Cerburetting Gases; and I do hereby declare the-t the following is a. full and exact description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in producing hydrocarbon liquids used for the carburetion of gases for illuminating purposes, by combining the volatile'portions of the results of the petroleum and coal distillation, the object being'to provide a. fluid for carburettin gpurposcs which shall have them propoi ltidris di dirbon and hydrogen, shall be readily afi'ected by changes of temperature, and not liable to condensation in cold weather; and it consists for this purpose of a. combination of the light products of the distillation of petroleum with the light products of thedistillation of coal. The petroleum products should have u grnvity oi" about 79 B. A
higher gravity-may be used, if desired. The coal productsshould be rectified, and should be from- 28 to 30.
- I mix these two products in the proportion of one part of the light products of' coal to five ports-of the light products of petroleum. Diiferentproportions of the coal and petroleum products muy be used, varyingthe mixture according to the temperature or the result desired. The coal products all containau excess of carbon. The petroleum products all contain an excess of hydrogen. The coal products do not'vaporize regularly, and are liable'tobecomc solids at low temperatures, while the excess of carbon they con tain renders their use desirable for curburetting purposes. The petroleum products vaporize uniformly, do not congeal at low temperatures, and perfectly dissolve and mix with the coal products. The mixture, therefore, of these hydrocarbons produces the best photometric results, and makes practicable the conditionsior carburetting gases at varying degrees of temperature.
,lIa.ving thus fully described my invention, what I desire a. patent for, is-
1. A hydrocarbon-liquid used for the purpose above named, produced by the combination of the coal and petroleum carbons, as described and set forth.-
2. Adding to the photometric value of gases by carburetting with thehyilrocarbons produced by the combination of the light products of the distillation of coal nndpctroleum.
3. The process, substantially as set forth, of manufacturing hydrocarbons for carburetting gases by combining the hydrocarbons of coal-and petroleum in variable proportions, as set forth.
