FERDINAND HSE AND WILLIAM ROST. OF OAK PARK. lLLlNO IS.
' Letters .Patent No. 65,743, (lated June 1], 1867. l
IMPBOVED METHOD OF UNLGADING RAILROAD GARS.
TO ALL Wl-IOM IT MAY CONCERNS Bc it known that we, FERDIAHD IIAASE and WILLIAM R031', of Oak Park, in the county of. Cook, and Stnte of Illinois, have invented n new end useful Self-Unloading Railway Cerf and we do herchy declare that the fol-lowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of our invention consists innfolding, partially-revolving platform, set in the freine of a. flat ear, and operated by machinery so arranged that/hyturnng the broke and starting the ear the platform unfolds itself` and unloads the cargo, as will-be hereinafter fully explained.
To enable others skilled inthe 'nrt to mekennd use our invention, we will proceed to describe its constructionl und operation.-
A double or folding platform, A, consists of' two single platforms, B l, each of which is provided at the ends with pins C C, that enter the corresponding openings in the cross-pieces D D of the car, and on which the platforms B B con revolve. Boards b are secured to the inner edges of the said platforms for the purpose of facilitating the throwing'off the lood when the plat-forms open. x In the contre of the ear-fratrie, nml under i the platform A, are set three pulleys, the central one, F, being larger than the pulleys F F. This pulley E has two pins d d secured toits flanges und diametricolly opposed to cech other, to leach' o'f which chains G G aresecured; the axle of Vthe pulley E being also provided with a bracket, F., to which a rod, y', is attached. The chains G G, passing over the pulleys F F, nre atta-ched- 'to the plates ll II secured to the levers I I working on the fnlerum-pins 1,' to the otherA end of which levers half-circular cog-wheels K K are pinned, the corners of the wheels Being provided with small rollers I: lc to diminish the friction of-snid4 corners when in ontaetu'ith plates T T. India-rubber. cushions L L are pnt between the plates II II and the levers I I, and springs M M are.`l abutting to the en rffrnm'e and secured to the levers I, both for the purpose of preventing suddeu jerks on the* levers and cog-wheels when unloading the pl'ntform. Ilates T T are hinged tothe top of the timber ofthe cnrframe and 4lying-on .the same. They nre to be aeted'upon by the corner rolle`rs k l: of the cog-wheels lli K, und to raise :ind revolve the platforms D B. The rod g terminntes with n chain, N, whose end is secured to the drum Oof the brake P. The axles Q Q ofthe cnr are provided with pinions lt l?. whose teeth may gear into the teeth of 'the cog-wheels K K when these are brought down. A
The' operation consists in the following: When n. train consists of several cnrs of ythezxhove description,4 loaded with gravel or other materia-l, each cnr is provided' with a brckeman. To unload the cors the train is stopped, a bralcem'nn turns the brake, whose drum O winds up the chainN, pulls the rod g', and turns the pulley E, which in its turn, by menne of chains G G, acts on' the levers I I and brings down the cog-wheels K Ix', whose teeth mesh into the teeth of.the aile-pinions R R. When this is dono the locomosth c starts, the axle-pinion! R R .revolve the cog-wheels K K, whose ends, providedwith rollers l: fr, raise'up the plates T T, and these, in their'v turn, uplift the platforms Il B in the centre of the enr," :ind the load slides on both sides donn to the ground. The locomotive needs to move but o short distence. It is evident that one car muy be unloaded after another ystony distance, or the whole train unloaded st oncc.
. There is a device put outside'of the platform, andwlicre the hrekeman stands, whose purpose is to fold the l platform again gradually. It consists in the brackets Z'Z, set firmly on the pins C C of the platforms B Il, and
connected, by rods 'u e, with the brackets m 7L of Athoeentrel wheel, revolving on alpin, a, set in the cross-piece D, und containing o. ratchet-wheel, 1J, secured to it. A lever, q, provided on one of its sides with n pawl, '.1', and o spring, 's,-to hold the pawl in place, is also set. on the pin o. There 'is a pin` i, to hold in plncc thehandle ofthe lever q. l l
The operation of this device `consists in this, that when the plattform is shut., Aor is fir-e horizontal position,- the end of the'lever q is under the pin t, and when the-platformV opens the brackets I l -m 'n und the rods move` freely, as nlso moves freely the ratehetwheclp; but when the platform has opened it. will not shut regain hy itself, the pawl'r being caught into the teeth of the rntehet-wheel p. In order to letl down the platforms, the brekeman disengages the end of the lcver'q from under the pin t, and, by the aid of the ratchet-wheel und pawl cnn fold the platforms gradually, and when'it is closed he has lto press withhis foot the end efthe pawl, so n; to disengitge itfrom vthe ratchet-wheel and move the lever bucle to its original position.
whatwe elnfim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Potent, is
1. vThe folding platform A, constructed and'cpcratng substuntilly as set forth. y 2. The pulleys E F F,'rod g', und chainsA G G, in combination tvith platesAH H, levers I I, cog-wheels K K, and the drum Oof the brake, the whole xxx-ranged so as to bring down tl'te cog-wheels K K when desirable, and mesh their tecrtlv into the teeth of thc pinions R R of the cai-axle, substantially ns herein described und specified. A
. 3. The pinions R R set on the cnr-cxles,n combination with the described device, to automatically unload the folding platform A, substantially ns set forth.
4. The device to gradually fold the platform A, consisting of brackets Il and m n, rods v u, ratchet-wheel p, and lever q, constructed as described, the -whole arranged and operating substantially calici-cin described und for the purpose specified. I
5. The plates T T, hinged to the car-frame to raise. the platforms B B, in combina'tio with the said platforms, substantially as described and specified. 'j
