MERCERIZING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 655,546, dated August 7, 1900. Application filed Hovember 6, 1899. Serial Ho. 738,000. No model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. DENN, a citi zen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Mercerizing Apparatus, of whichthe following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to so construct a machine for mercerizi ng skein-yarn that the skeins may be carried first through the mercerizing liquid and then through the washwater, a further objectbeiug to provide for an automatic change in the position of the skeins on their carrying spools ordrnms while subject to the action of the mercerizing liquid and alsowhile the yarn is being washed, and a still further object is to readily govern the tension upon the skeins and to provide for the automatic taking up of any slack that may be caused therein during the treatment. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a mercerizing apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is atransverse section on the line a a, Fig. 1; and Figs. 8, 4, and are detached views, on a larger scale, illustrating certain features of construction of the machine which could not be clearly shown in the general views because of the small scale to which the latter are drawn.
The tub I is divided into two compartments 2 and 3 by a central transverse partition 4 and an inclined partition 5, the latter being for the purpose of limiting the capacity of the compartment 2, which contains the canstic-soda solution, whereby the mercerizing of the yarn is effected, the object of this construction being to employ as little of said mercerizing liquid as is necessary to effect the proper action upon the yarn as the latter is being carried through the liquid.
To suitable bearings upon the tub or upon the legs of the same are adapted shafts or spindles which carry sprocket-wheels (3, which support a pair of endless chains 7, the sprocketwheels being so disposed that the chains on entering the compartment of the tub at the top are caused to pass first downward close to the end of said compartment 2 and toa point close to the bottom of the same and then rise into the compartment 3, close to one end of the same. The chains then descend to the bottom of said compartment, traverse the same close to the bottom, and rise adjacent to the opposite end of the compartment, from which they pass down to and under the bottom of the tub and thence up to the startingpoint at the end of the compartment 2.
Power may be imparted to any one or more of the sprocket-wheel shafts, so as to cause the chains to traverse in the direction intended. Rigidly secured to the chains and extend ing from one to the other are a series of crossbars 7, each of which has at one end a bearing for a spindle 8, to which is secured a spool or drum 9, said spindle also having secured to it a star wheel 10 and having loosely mounted upon it an antifriction-roller 11, and each bar is slotted throughout the greater portion of its length for the reception and guidance of a block 12, which has a projecting spindle 13, upon which is mounted, so as to be free to turn, a spool or drum 14, the block 12 being threaded for the reception of a. screwstem 15, the head 16 of said stem bearing upon a coiled spring 17, which is interposed. be tween said head and a shoulder 18 on the bar 7.
On the inclined bottom 5 of the compart ment 2 of the tub is a grooved bar 20, one side of said bar throughout a portion of its length having projecting pins 21, and the other side of the bar throughout the remaining portion of its length having similar projecti'ng pins 22.
On the bottom of the compartment 3 of the tub is a bar 20, which, however, has projecting pins 22 on but one side.
The operation of the machine is as follows: A skein or skeins of yarn being applied to the spools or drums 9 and Hot one of the crossbars 7, the tension-screw is manipulated so as to draw the druml away from the drum 9 until the desired amount of tension has been imparted to the skein, this tension being dependent upon the extent to which the coiled spring 17 has been compressed. This operation is repeated in connection with the drums of all of the crossbars 7. As each skein or bunch of skeins is being carried through the compartment 2 of parallel with the inclined partition 5 and pass 7 c tub, the star-wheel i carried by the indie S of the drum 9, upon which said ein or bunch of skcins is mounted, comes to contact first with the pins 21 and then th the pins 22 of the bar 20. Hence turng movement first in onedirection and then the opposite direction is imparted to the um 9, the bearing of the antifrietion-roller upon the opposite flange of the bar .30 inring the engagement of the star-wheel ith the pins 21 92. This causes back-audrth movement of the skeins and insures the mass of the mereerizing liquid to all porms of each skein,so that the full mereerizg effect upon all portions of the yarn is selred. After leaving the mercerizipg solu- )n the skeins are carried through the washater in the compartment 3 of-the tub, the nuts 9 being turned forwardly by reason of .e engagement of the star-wheels 10 with e pins 22 of the bars 530 in said compartent. The shrinkage of the yarn due to the :tion of the mereerizing solution thereupon prevented by the tension which is origitlly imparted to the skeins, and if during e washing of the yarn in the compartment )f the tub there is any relaxation or stretchg of the yarn beyond the original limits [ch stretch will be automatically taken up w reason of the expansion of the spring 17. t'ter the yarn emerges from the wash-water the compartment 3 of the tub the skeins ay be removed from the drums 9 and 14 'epa-ratory to the application of fresh skeins eret-o either at the same end of the tub or t the opposite end of the same, a continuous )eration being thus provided for. Having thus described my invention, I aim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination in mereerizing appara- :s, of a tub for containing mereerizing liqd, a pair of endless chains passing through .id tub, and laterally separated from each her, bars extending from chain to chain 1d carried thereby, a pair of skein-carrying -ums upon each of said bars, one of said 'ums being located near one end of the bar id the other near the opposite end of the me, substantially as specified. 2. The combination in mereerizing apparas, of a tub having two chambers, one for ntaining mereerizing liquid and theother 1' containing wash-water, a pair of endless rains passing first through one chamber of e tub and then through the other chamber the same, said chains being laterally sepated from each other, a series of bars exuding from chain to chain and carried by id chains, and a pair of skein-carrying 'ums mounted upon each of said bars, one said drums being located near one end of e bar and the other near the opposite end the same, substantially as specified. 3. The combination in mereerizing apparas, of the mereerizing vessel, a pair of latall y-separated endless chains passing therethrough and carrying bars extending from chain to chain, a series of pairs of skein-carrying drums mounted on said bars, one drum at each end of the bar, means for traversing the chains so as to carry the pairs of drums through the mereerizing vessel, and means for automatically changing the position of the 'skeins on said drums while passing through the vessel, substantially as specified.
4., The combination in mereerizing apparatus, of a mereerizing vessel, an endless carrier passing through the same, pairs of drums mounted on said carrier for the reception of the skeins to be treated, and means for moving one of said drums of each pair from and toward the other so as to impart tension to the skein or skeins carried thereby, substantially as specified.
5. The combination in mereerizing apparatus, of a mereerizing-tub, an endless carrier passing through the same, pairs of skein-carrying drums mounted upon said endless car rier, and means for imparting yielding or elastic tension to the skeins carried by said drums, substantially as specified.
6. The combination in mereerizing apparatus, of a mercerizing-tub, an endless-chain carrier, a cross-bar thereon, a drum mounted in fixed longitudinal relation to said crossbar, and another drum carried by a block which is adjustable longitudinally on the cross-bar, substantially as specified.

The combination in mereerizing appara tus, of a mereerizing-tub, an endless-chain carrier, a cross-bar thereon, a drum mounted in fixed longitudinal relation to said crossbar, another drum carried by a block which 8. The combination in 1nereerizingapparatus, of a mereerizing or washing tub, an endless carrier, a 'pair of skein-drums mounted thereon, a toothed wheel carried by the spin- (lle of one of said drums, and an engaging rack with which said toothed wheel meshes as the spools are carried forward through the tub, whereby rotating movement is imparted to the drum, substantially as specified.

The combination in mereerizing apparatus,.of a mereerizing or washing tub, an endless carrier, a pair of skein-drums mounted thereon, one of said drums having a spindle with toothed wheel thereon and oppositelydisposed racks for engaging with said toothed wheel as it is carried forward through the tub, whereby movement first in one direction and then in the opposite direction is imparted to the drum, substantially as specified.
10. The combination in mereerizing apparatus, of a mereerizing or washing vessel, an endless carrier, a pair of skein-drums carried thereby, one of said drums having a spindle with toothed wheel thereon, a rack with which mm weaned wneei engages as it is carried fm'ward through the tub, an antifrictlionroller on the spindle, and a, bar with which sail roller engages in order to retain the toothed Wheel in mesh with the rack, substem-m1 y as specified.
