Be it known that I, JOHN S. WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ooatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Cutting Elliptical Holes, of which the following is a specification. I
Myinvention relates especially to machines for cutting elliptical holes in metallic plates, such as boiler and tank plates; but it will be understood that the machine can be constructed for cutting elliptical holes in other materials and for other purposes as well.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of a machine for cutting elliptical holes, to makePit adjustable, and to 7 so arrange the tool-carrier that the tool will out either an elliptical hole or a round hole, as fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine for cutting elliptical holes. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end View looking in the direction of the arrow 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification, and Fig. 5 is a view showing the tool arranged on a different type of support from that shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A is. the base of the machine, having a standard A. On the face of this standard are slideways a a, on which slides vertically the carrying-arm B, having slideways h b for the tool-carriage D.
Fixed on the arm Bis a bracket E, in which is mounted a shaft 6, having on one end a head e, in which is mounted a slide 6 carrying a stud 6 The slide 6 is adjusted in the head 6 by set-screws 2 one bearing against each end of the slide. By adjusting the setscrews more or less throw is given to the stud e The stud e is connected to the carriage D by means of a rod F, so that as the head 6 revolves the carriage D is reciprocated on the slideways b b. The carriage D carries the driven tool-shaft (1, having at its lower end a tool-head d, in which is mounted a tool (I of any suitable form. The tool-head can be made in the usual manner, so that the tool can be adjusted toward or from the center of rotation to cut smaller or larger holes. As the tool-shaft revolves and the carriage reciprocates on its slide the tool travels in the path of an ellipse, and byincreasing the move ment of the carriage or adjusting the tool holes of different shape and size may be cut.

The outer end of the shaft 1 is splined, andon the shaft is a bevel gear-wheel i having a feather resting in the spline, so that while it will turn with the shaft it slides withthe carriage D. The bevel-wheel meshes with a bevel-wheel (1 On the hub of this wheel is a gear-wheel d, which meshes witha Wheel (1 having a feather adapted to the splined tool-shaft d, so that while the tool-shaft will turn with the gear it can be also raised or lowered to the work. Any means may be used to adjust the tool. Ihave shown a common form of adjusting mechanism consisting of a rack f, forming a continuation of the tool-shaft, and a pinion f meshing therewith and mounted on a shaftf on which is a handwheel f on turning which the tool may be raised or lowered.
The carrying-arm B may be raised or lowered by a screw-shaft K, adapted to a bearing in the frame of the machine and to a nut in the carrying-arm B. This screw-shaft can be turned by hand or by power.
After the machine is set by adjusting the tool (I and the slide 6 in the head 6 the plate or other article is securedto the table A which is mounted on the base-plate, and the machine set in motion. As the tool revolves around its center of rotation it is also moved toward and from the center by the head 6 through the rod F, and thus it travels in an elliptical path, cutting the hole in the plate the desired form and size.
It will be understood that the construction and arrangement of the supporting-frame crank on the shaft at one side of the machine,
as shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a series of drillheads on a cross-frame secured to end standards. The heads D are ordinary drill-heads which may be adjusted at any point on the frame, while the head D is connected to a crank in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1. This head D can be disconnected from its crank and secured to the frame, so that it can be used tocut circular holes. The head D, Fig. 1, may be also disconnected and secured to the arm B for the same purpose. In the present instance I have shown a series of set-screws s, which can be turned so as to confine the head D to the arm 13. By backing off these screws the head can be released.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a machine for cutting elliptical holes, of the carrier, a head thereon, a tool-shaft mounted in said head, an arm on said shaft carrying a tool, means for driving the tool-shaft, a driven shaft, a head thereon, a slide mounted on said head, a stud carried by said slide, arod connecting the said stud to the head and set-screws bear ing against each end of the slide for adjusting the slide, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a base adapted to receive material to be cut, a standard, an arm vertically adjustable on the standard, a bracket fixed on the arm, a shaft mounted on the bracket, an adjustable crank carried by the shaft, a carriage adapted to slide on the arm, a tool-shaft mounted in the carriage, an arm on the shaft carrying a tool, a rodconnecting the adjustable crank to the carriage, a driven shaft geared to the crank-shaft and the tool-shaft so that as the tool-shaft is rotated the carriage will be reciprocated, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a machine for cutting elliptical holes, of the frame,a fixed shaft having an adjustable crank, a sliding carriage, a tool-shaft thereon, means for connecting the adjustable crank to the tool-carriage and means for fastening the tool-carriage in a fixed position when detached from the crank-shaft so that the tool can cut circular holes, substantially as described.
