UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WILLOX, or GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
CENTRIFUGAL MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,536, dated August 7, 1900.
Application filed March 8, 1900- Serial No. 7,787: (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID WILLOX, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britainand Ireland, residing at 48 Burgher Street, Parkhead, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Centrifugal Machines, (for which application for patent has been made in Great Britain, No. 24,017, dated December 2, 1899,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to centrifugal machines, and more especially to such as are used for drying clothes or fabrics; and it has for its object to provide means whereby risk of accident occasioned by throwing in articles to be dried while the centrifugal basket is in motion or by contact with it may be obviated.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an under-driven centrifugal machine, showing my invention applied thereto, Figure 1 being an elevation with the cover of the machine closed, Fig. 2 a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 an elevation showing the cover open. Fig. 4 is a verticalsection, and Fig. 5 a horizontal section, of the improved centrifugal machine, showing the rotating parts of the machine and the connections between the cover and the operating-lever, the latter being in dotted lines.
In carrying out the invention I provide the casing A of the machine with a hinged or pivoted lid or cover B, which is automatically closed by the act of starting the rotation of the basket and opened on stopping the machine. The lid or cover B is preferably pivoted on a rock-shaft 0, having at its end a tubular crank-arm D, which is connected by a connecting-link E to the hand-lever F, used for starting and stopping the machine, so that on throwing over the hand-lever F to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5 to put the basket in motion the lid or cover B is swung down onto the top of the casing A, or in throwing over the lever F to the position shown in Fig. 3 the machine-brake is applied and the safety-cover opened.
In centrifugal machines of this class the motor employed for driving usually consists, as shown at Fig. 4, of a Pelton Wheel G, acted on bya jet of water from a nozzle H, the water being controlled by a valve or cook secured on the shaft F to which the hand-lever F is keyed, the valve or cook being turned in its casing to open or close the passage to the nozzle H. The inner endof the shaft F has a crank F secured to it, and a pin on said crank engages a forked portion of a weighted link I. The link I is also connected to a pin J on the brake-band J, so that the action of throwing over the hand-lever F besides closing the water-jet tightens the band J around the brake-wheel K and brings the,
machine to a standstill. Although the aforedescribed mechanism for starting and stopping the machine has been shown on the drawings for the purpose of illustrating the invention, it is obvious that the invention is capable of application to machines of this class driven in a different manner, provided connections such as shown be made between the hand-lever F and the cover B".
Having now described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rotary or centrifugal machine having a stationary casing the combination with the stationary casing, of a cover adapted to close the orifice therein, and so connected to the usual starting-lever that it closes when said lever is operated to start the machine.
2. In a rotary'or centrifugal machine, the combination with the stationary casing, of a cover adapted to close the opening in said casing, a rock-shaft carrying said cover, a crank-arm on said rock-shaft and a link connecting said crank and the usual startinglever, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have-hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID WILLOX.
