To whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I,- THEODORE BROOKEv JONES, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, anda resident of Harrogate, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Holders, (for which I have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 9,399, bearing date May at, 1899,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a leaf-holder for holding music and the like in such a manner that the finger of the said leaf-holder may be turned in the ordinary way and be held in position by friction or it may be so balanced as to return to the vertical position automatically, the change from one type to the other being effected in a most simple and efiective manner; and my invention has also reference to means whereby the position of the leaf-holder may be adjusted relatively to the music-rest in order to suit the various widths and thicknesses of books.

In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a sectional side elevation and a sectional end elevation, drawn to an enlarged scale, of a leaf-holderconstructed according to my invention, showing the finger free to balance on its spindle; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same leafholder with the finger held in position by friction. Figs. 4c and 5 are respectivelya side elevation and an end elevation of my leaf= holder shown adjustably attached to a music-rest.

E is a barrel having an exterior screwthread, so that it may be screwed into amusic-rest B or other place of attachment, and F is a spindle screwed or otherwise fixed in said barrel. At the outer end of the spindle F is a flange or collar G, and the face of the collar is grooved at H, so as to form a cam for a pin J to act upon. Said pin J is secured in a cap K, crosswise of the same, and said cap is fitted to turn and slide upon the spindle F. The cap K is recessed forthe collar G, and there is a spring in said recess between the collar Gand said cap. M is a finger pivoted upon the spindle F between the barrel E and the cap K, and said finger has a weight upon one end to form a counterbalance.

When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. '1 and 2, the pin J is at right angles to the cam groove in the face of the collar G, and the cap is prevented fronibeing moved by the spring L toward the barrel E in consequence of the pin J bearing upon the highest parts of the cam end of the collar, and in held in the desired position by the friction of the parts; but the finger may be turned without moving back said cap K. It will thus be seenthat the finger M can be used as an ordinary leaf-holder if the pressure of the spring L is allowed to act on the cap K, and it it is desired to allow the finger M to act freely in its pendulum form a quarterturn of the cap K causes the pin J to ride up the cam end H and cause the cap K to move away from the barrel E and release the finger M.

The above-described leaf-holder may be attached to any music-rest by screwing the bar'- rel E direct into the material forming the rest; but where it is desired to have the leaf-holder adjustable to suit various widths and thick nesses of books I employ the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which a dovetailed rail A is attached to the under side of the music-rest B and a compound slide 0, which is fitted to slide on said rail A, and said slide carries a sliding bracket D, having a turnedup end D. The barrel E of the leaf-holder is screwed into the end 1) of the bracket D, so that its center is at about the height of the center of the music-rest B, and "the compound slide is provided with a clampingscrew N, which permits of the sliding bracket D and rail A being locked together.

The sliding bracket D and the compound slide 0 are first adjusted relatively to the music rest l3 and set to suit the width and 100 thickness of the book. Then by tightening the clamping-screw N the bracket D is firmly clamped to the rail A and the leaf-holder securely held in position.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the barrel E, the spindle F secured to said barrel, a collar G with a cam-groove therein at the outer end of said spindle and a weighted finger-pivoted upon said spindle, of a cap K fitted to turn adjustingthe leaf-holder transversely of the music 7 rest and means for clamping the bracket tothe rail, substantially as specified. 3. The combination with the leaf-holder consisting of the attaching-barrel, a spindle securedto said barrel, a weighted finger pivoted upon said spindle, and means for clampingsaid finger, of the rail A,adapted to be secured longitudinally to the under surface of the music-rest, a slide 0 connected to and -mevable along the rail, a bracket D having an.upturned .end receiving said spindle of the leaf-holder and movable'in said slide for adjusting the leaf-holder transversely of the music rest, and means for clamping the bracket to the rail,substantially-as spe'cifiedr In witness whereof I'have hereunto set my hand in presence of'two' Witnessesn V THEODORE BROOKE'JONES.
