HENRY L. HASKELL, OF LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR TO THE LUDINGTON NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.

BACK-STOP FOR GAM E-BOARDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,063, dated J uly 17, 1900.

Application filed January 30, 1900. Serial No. 3,341. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY L. HAsKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludington, in the county of Mason and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Stops for Game- Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in back-stops for game-boards. Its object is to provide a back-stop which may be conveniently packed and quickly applied; and to this end it comprises, essentially, two separable parts adapted to be placed at substantially right angles to each other on adjacent sides of the game=board and secured together at the meeting ends.

It also comprises an erasable surface, on

which may be kept the score of the game. In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a gameboard with my device applied. Fig. 2 represents an inside plan View of the two divisions separated, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective back view of a modification.

In the drawings, 1 represents one side of the back-stop, and 2 the other side.

3 represents a game-board, and at a channel in the game-board, in which the parts of the back-stop may be placed so that they may be held upright.

5 represents a tenon or joint, and 6 slots in the opposite side of the back-stop, adapted to receive the tenon 5. The tenon 5 may be reinforced on the back by cloth or other material to prevent it from tearing.

6 represents an erasable surface. Obviously this erasable surface may cover all or part of the back-stop but I prefer to have it cover onlya portion, so as not to interfere with the round corner. This erasable surface may be plain, or it may have, as I have indicated upon it, an arrangement of lines and words to guide the score and of course may bear any other directions or printed matter.

At 7 and 8 I have shown mortises in the modified form, which are adapted to join two parts together, the reinforcing material being indicated at 9.

The parts of this back-stop may readily be separated and packed flat with the gameboard and at any time quickly put together and applied, the construction being then such as to be peculiarly adapted to the round-corner game boards so generally used in combination games or in the game-boards which are the subject of my patents. It is desirable that the locking-joints should be flexible, and this is, in fact, essential where the back-stop is to be applied, as shown in Fig. 1, to a game-board with a rounded corner. This form of backstop is also applicable to square-cornered boards, especially with the form shown in Fig. 3, and is therefore of universal application.

Having fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A back-stop comprising two separable parts, the parts having corresponding flexible locking-joints.

2. A back-stop comprising two separable parts, the parts having corresponding looking parts, and an erasable score-surface.

3. A flexible back-stop comprising jointed sections, one of the sections bearing an erasable surface.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

HENRY L. HASKELL.
