APPARATUS FOR PUTTING ON PULLEY-BELTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,052, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed February 13, 1900. erial No. 5,095. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HAROLD CLIFF and TRAVIS BURTON, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Oldham, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Apparatus for Putting on the Driving Straps or Belts of Revolving Pulleys, of which the following is a specification thereof.
This invention relates to the construction of improved apparatus for put-ting on the driving straps or belts on pulleys while revolving, thus avoiding all danger of accidents.
Our improved apparatus will be readily understood on reference to the sheet of drawings hereunto annexed and the following explanation thereof.-
Figure 1 on the drawings is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an edge View, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of a driving-pulley with our improved apparatus shown as applied thereto, a being the shaft, b the pulley, and c the driving-belt, these figures showing the positions of the apparatus when the belt 0 is off the pulley b and hanging loosely over the shaft 0.. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar views showing the action of the apparatus when putting on the drivingbelt.
The improved apparatus consists principally of a segmental pulley or guide 01, which is mounted looselyon the shaft 64 alongside 0f the driving-pulley b, the central boss of the said segmental pulley d being held close to that of the driving-pulley b by means of a collar e. The segmental pulley or guide d is preferably made about one-quarter of the circle, the circumferential part of the same being preferably of the same radius as the driving-pulley b and their edges lying close together.
The circumferential part or rim of the guide-pulley cl is connected to its boss by a segmental plate or web, and it is tapered or inclined at its outer edge-7i. 6., the edge farthest from the driving-pulley Z), alongside which the apparatus is placedthis inclined edge being provided with a flange f, pr0jecting outward beyond the circumferential part.
The taper must be such that at the widest part the rim of the segmental guide at is at least the same width as the strap 0 which it is required to put on, and at the narrowest part it must be less than the width of the said strap.
When the strap or belt 0 is loose or off the 5 5 driving-pulley, the segmental guide (1 hangs down out of the way, (see Figs; 1, 2, and 3;) but when it is required to be put on the revolving driving-pulley b the workman, by means of a forked rod or other suitable in- 66 strument applied to the projection g, raises up the segmental guide d until the wide part or leading edge of its rim comes against the inside of the strap 0. The strap will then tend to lie along the rim of the segmental guide in such a manner that as the said guide is further raised the portion of the strap which overlies the tapering rim will come in contact with the driving-pulley b. This will cause the segmental guide d to commence revolv- 7o ing, and as it revolves the inclined flange f on such guide will act against the edge of the strap or belt 0 and push it sidewise onto the revolving driving-pulley, (see Figs. 4, 5, and 6,) and when the said segmental guide has performed its work it will fall away from the strap and hang loosely on the shaft, as before.
lVe claim as our invention The improved apparatus for putting on the driving-strap of a revolving pulley, consist- 8o ing of a segmental guide of the same radius as the pulley and mounted to turn upon the shaft close to the pulley and provided with an inclined projecting flange which, .as the said segmental pulley or guide is rotated, acts against the edge of the driving-strap and puts it onto the driving-pulley, substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of 0 two subscribing witnesses.
HAROLD CLIFF. TRAVIS BURTON.
