SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,954, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed March 20, 1900. Serial No. 9,388. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. GARMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in /Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide means for locking the movable jaw in place and readily releasing the same, which shall be extremely simple in construction, readily operated, and at the same time be durable, not liable to get out of order, easily removed, and shall hold the jaw accurately at any given point to which it may be moved; and with these ends in view the invention consists of a wrench having an ordinary stationary jaw, a shank the handle portion of which is bent at an inclination, a reciprocating yoke mounted upon the straight portion of the said shank, in which is rigidly secured a lower jaw, a spring-pressed clampin g block or dog pivotally secured in the yoke and adapted to engage in a series of nicks arranged upon the shank for securing the lower jaw in the desired position, and a cam-lever mounted in the reciprocating yoke, which is in like numerals of reference indicate corre-' sponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side "view of my improved wrench. Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 indicates the shank of the wrench, provided at one end with a rigid jaw 2, which is indented or knurled on its inner face, as at 3, and the opposite end of the shank is bent at an inclination, as at 4, and provided with a handle 5, secured in position by means of a nut 6, mounted upon the screw-threaded end 7 of the shank. The straight portion of the shank upon its upper face is provided with a series of teeth 8 and upon its lower face has formed integral therewith a sto'p-lu g 9, arranged near the inner end otIthe inclined portion 4. of the shank. The straight portion of the shank is further provided on its upper face with an offset or shoulder 10, terminating at the forward end of the shank in the rigid jaw 2, and its lower end tapering, as at 11, and terminating at the inner end of the series of teeth 8. The offset or shoulder forms the straight portion of the shank of two unequal widths.
Mounted upon the straight portion of the shank is a reciprocating yoke 12, the sides thereof extending above the straight portion,
as shown, and has secured between the same by means of screws 13 the inner jaw 14, having its engaging face 14 formed at an incline, and retains the yoke upon the shank. The rear end is formed with a concave recess, in which is seated the forward end of the clamping block or dog-15. This block or dog 15 is pivotally secured between the sides of the yoke by means of a pin 16 and has its rear end formed with an enlarged triangularshaped recess 18, and a triangular-shaped notch 19, arranged below the recess 18 and the lower face of the block or dog, is formed a portion of its length in a downwardly-extend ing inclined manner, as at 20, and is adapted to be seated against the inclined end 11 of the offset or shoulder 10. Pivotally secured between the sides of the yoke by means of a pin 21 is a cam-lever 22, provided in one end with a tapering point 23, which'engages the recess 18 of the block or. dog, and the lever is further provided with a shoulder 24, which engages the rear end of the dogor block. Se-
cured upon the upper face of the inner jaw by means of lugs 25 is a flat bearing-spring 26, which bears against the upper face of the dog or block, causing the notch 19 to be kept in engagement with the teeth 8.
The operation of my improved wrench is as follows: Assuming that the lower jaw is in position, as shown in Fig. 2, the action of the spring and dog will securely hold the jaw in such position, for the reason that the notch 19 engages the teeth 8, which prevents the yoke from moving. When it is desired to increase the distance between the two jaws from the position shown in Fig. 2, the rear end of the lever 22 is forced downwardly, elevating thereby the dog or block 15 and permitting of-the reciprocating movement of the yoke and jaw to the position desired. When the lever is released, the action of the spring will cause the block or dog to engage the teeth 8 and securely hold the jaw in the desired position. By forming the handle portion of the shank at an inclination the wrench can be easily balanced in the hand, as well as adjusting the position of the movable jaw with the same hand, either to increase or diminish the space between the j aws- It is thought the many advantages of my improved construction of wrenches can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the deportion terminating on the upper face of the shank in an inclined shoulder 10, combined with a reciprocating yoke mounted on said shank, a 1 1g carried by the shank to limit the rearward movement of said yoke,an inner jaw carried by the yoke and provided with an in clined engaging face, a clampingeblock pivotally mounted in said yoke and engaging the rear end of said inner jaw, said clamping.-
block having an enlarged recess 18 and notch 19 in its rear end with a part of its lower face inclined to engagethe shoulder 10, a lever 22 pivotally mounted-in said yoke and engaging in the recess 18 of the block, and a bearingspring secured to said inner jaw and engaging the upper face of said block, substantially as described.
