COUNTER-SKIVING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. STEWART, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oounter-Skiving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for one object to provide a machine for skiving a counter first along one edge and then along the opposite edge.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of mechanism for skiving the curved edges of counters.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement, which I shall now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent plan views showing a skiving-machine constructed in accordance with my invention with the curved-edge skiverin two different positions. Fig. 3 represents a partial plan view enlarged. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 5 represents a front elevation. Fig. 6 represents a right-hand end elevation. Fig. 7 represents a detail end elevation of the curved -edge skiver. Fig. 8 represents a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 9 represents a detail side elevation of the feed-rolls which introduce the counter to the curved-edge skiver. Fig. 10 represents a horizontal section taken between the feed rolls of the curved edge skiver.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of the machine.
2 designates in general the straight-edge skiver at the right-hand end of the machine, and 3 designates in general the curved-edge skiver at the left-hand end of the machine. The straightedge skiver is or may be a mechanism embodying a skiving-knife 4, set at an inclination to the horizontal path of the counter and in a position to skive the straight or lower edge of the counter, and two positively-driven feed-rolls 5 6, adapted to force the counter against the knife 4:. Any other suitable straight-edge skiving mechanism may be substituted for the one here shown.
7 is a drive-shaft provided with belt-pulleys 8 9 and connected to drive the feed-rolls 5 6 through a system of spur-gears 10.
Provisions are made for advancing the counter from the straight-edge skiver to the curved-edge skiver, said provisions consist ing permissibly of a series of under feed-rolls 11 12 13, driven from the shaft of the upper feed-roll 6 in the straight-edge skiver through a suitable system of spur-gearing 14:, and a series of upper feed-rolls 15 16 17, paired with the said under feed-rolls and acting as idle presser-rolls. The two end presser-rolls 15 17 are journaled in yokes or rock-frames 18 19, pivoted to a common shaft or pintle 20, and the intermediate presser-roll 16 is jour naled in a secondary yoke or rock-frame 21, pivoted on the shaft orpintle 22 of the presserroll 15. A spring 23, attached to the yoke 19 and to the machine-frame, exerts a tension tending to hold the last pair of feed-rolls 13 17 in contact, and a spring 24, attached to the yoke 21 and to the machine-frame, simi-- larly tends to hold the first and intermediate pairs of feed-rolls 11 15 and 12 16 in contact. It is to be observed, however, that for long counters the first and last pairs of feedrolls will ordinarily perform the feeding aciion while the intermediate rolls are held out of action, this being accomplished by means of a pin 25, Fig. 3, which passes through holes in the yokes 18 and 21 and holds the free end of the yoke 21 elevated within the yoke 18, as shown in Fig. 4, in which position the presser-roll 16 is held out of cont-act with its under roll 12. When short counters are acted on, the pin 25 may be removed and the intermediate feed-rolls 12 16 brought into action. The under driven rolls 11 12 13 may have their surfaces milled or roughened to increase their hold on the counters. The under side of the hub of the yoke 18 is shown as formed with a deflecting-guide 26, which directs the advancing end of the counter into the grasp of the last pair of feed-rolls 13 17. 1
The curved-edge skiver is shown as embodying a knife 27, having its edge set at an inclination to the horizontal path of the counter, said inclination being opposite to the inclination of the knife 4. in the skiving mechanism 2, so as to skive the opposite curved or upper edge of the counter, and two feed-rolls 28 29 adapted to force the counter against the knife 27. The feed-rolls 28 29 are driven from the drive-shaft 7 through a 5 system of spur-gears at 30, Figs. 5 and 6, a
system of bevel-gears at 31, and a system of spur-gears at 32 33, both the under and the upper roll being positively driven. The feedrolls 28 29 engage the counter only on the edge or margin of the latter, and the under roll 28 may be fluted or milled to give it gripping power, and beveled with the largest diameter at its outer end, so as to tend to drive the outer edge of the counter faster than the middle, thus counteracting the opposing tendency to twist the counter, exerted by the knife 27.
A further bearing-surface for the counter is provided by rolls 35 36, loosely mounted on extensions or shafts of the feed-rolls 28 29. Should these rolls both be allowed to rotate, the counter would be fed practically in a straight direction through the skivin g mechanism 3, provided the counter were not otherwise retarded at any point. If, however, one of the loosely-mounted rolls is held from rotation, a frictional retarding action, which maybe increased by an additional frictionproducing member, is exerted on the counter at a point laterally adjacent to the point acted on by the feed-rolls 28 29. The counter is therefore given a twisting or angular motion, which causes it to pursue a curved path in passing the knife 27. A pin 37, which may be inserted in one of a series of holes 38 in the periphery of the loosely mounted roll 36 and bears against a fixed abutment 39, acts as a stop to prevent the rotation of the said loosely-mounted roll 36, thereby producing the described frictional retardation of the counter. An additional friction-producing device is shown in the shape of a finger 40, pivotally mounted at 41 and adapted to abut the under side of the counter at a point between the under feed-roll 28 and the looselymounted roll 35. The said finger 40 thereby cooperates with the upper loose roll 36 when the latter is held from rotation. A spring 42 places the finger 40 under tension, which tension may be regulated by means of an adj ustment 43, and an adjustable stop 44 provides a means for regulating the minimum operative distance between the finger 40 andthe roll 36 or for moving the inner end of said finger entirely out of operative relation with the roll 36. By suitably manipulating the adjustments 43 and 44 the amount of friction exerted by the finger 40 on the counter may be varied.
69 is a guide located at one side of the path of the counter between the feed-rolls 28 29. By means of the described feeding and retarding action the curved edge of the counter is held against this guide as the counter passes through the skiver and the skived margin accordingly corresponds accurately with the curvature of the edge.
The skiving mechanism 3 is mounted upon a frame 45, which is rotatable about a fixed center, whereby the angular relation of the feed-rolls of the skiver with respect to the feed-rolls 13 17 may be varied. For curved edges of greatest curvature this angle will be approximately a right angle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. For edges of less curvature the angle may be less than a right angle, as shown in Fig. 2, and for a straight skiving action the skiver and feed-rolls 28 29 will be placed parallel to the feed-rolls 13 17. In this latter case the pin 37 would be removed and the friction-finger 40 moved out of position of contact with the counter, thereby removing the frictional restraint to the passage of the counter.
It is desirable when the skiver 3 is set angularly with respect to the feed-rolls 13 17 to deflect the counter from its straight path as it leaves said feed-rolls. To this end I have shown the under feed-roll 13 in Fig. 9 as of tapered or beveled form, with the largest diameter at the end farthest removed from the pivotal point of the skiver.
To permit of the pivotal adjustment of the skiver-frame 45, the under shaft 46 on said frame, which drives the train of spur-gears 32, is shown in Fig. 5 as taking power through bevel-gears from a vertical shaft 47, which coincides with the pivotal axis of the frame 45.
The under feed-roll 28 of the skiver 3 is mounted in a bearing frame or yoke 48, which has a stem 49, Fig. 4, capable of vertical movement within a fixed socket 50. A spring 51, Fig. 5, normally forces the bearing-frame upwardly, and an adjustable stop-screw 52 limits its upward movement. The shaft of the under feed-roll 28 has a flexible or universal joint at 53. Normally the feed-rolls 28 29 are nearer together than the thickness of the counter. When the counter enters between them, the lower feed-roll is displaced downwardly to some extent and the spring 51 furnishes the driving tension. I utilize the vertical movement of the lower feed-roll to actuate a device herein termed a kicker for ejecting the skived counter from the machine. The kicker is represented at 54 and may consist of an arm attached to a pivotal hub or plate 55, the upper edge 56 of which is shaped in the arc of a circle and constitutes a driving-segment. The hub 55 is pivoted at 57 to a vertically-movable slide 58,
supported by the short end of a lever 29, pivoted at 60 to the machine-frame. The long ICC end of said lever is connected by a strut driving engagement with the segmental upper edge 56 of the kicker-hub 55. WVhen a counter is present between the feed-rolls 28- 29, the shaft end 63 is forced against the segment 56 with sufficient friction to oscillate said segment against the tension of a spring 64. \Vhen the counter passes from between the feed-rolls, this friction is relieved and the spring 64 returns the kicker 54. The arrangement of the kicker is such that the counter pursues a curved path around said kicker as the counter leaves the skiver. A pin 65 is placed in the path of the counter, so as to intercept the advancing end of the latter and serve as a guide for the movement of the counter, said pin being adapted to beinserted in any one of a series of holes 66in a plate 67 on the frame of the skiver 3. The release of the kicker 54 takes place, as stated, after the skived counter passes from between the feedrolls 28 29, and the kicker then throws or ejects the counter from the machine. It is to be further noted that the kicker is accessory to the actual skiving operation, for coming into action as the feed-rolls 28 29 release the counter it serves to assist the counter past the edge of the knife just as the last corner of the counter-is being skived. When the knife is dulled from continued use, this action of the kicker is particularly noticeable.
The downward movement of the under feed-roll 28, acting through the mechanism including the lever 59, also operates to lift the presser-roll 17 away from its mating feedroll 13, thereby causing a cessation of the gripping action of said pair of feed-rolls 13 17, in consequence of which the counter is permitted to slip out between theends of said feed-rolls and assume the position represented at 67 in Fig. 3, in which it is controlled entirely by the skiver 3. The feed-rolls 13 17 come together again as soon as the shoulder 71, marking the end of the segment 56, has passed the trunnion 63 in time to feed the next counter as it comes along.
The under side of the slide 58 is horizontal and of segmental form, so that said slide moves over the short end of the lever 59, when angular movement of the skiver 3 takes place without breaking the connection which includes said parts, thus providing a compensating connection which accommodates itself to the said movement.
As seen in Fig. 10, the guide 69, which is located at the side of the path of the counter and abuts the end faces of the rolls 29 30, ap proaches said rolls in a line perpendicular to the plane which includes their axes until it nearly reaches the roll, when its acting face is given a slight curve out of the perpendicular toward the ends of said rolls, the guide terminating just beyond the coacting line of the rolls. This curve or inclination of the guide so directs the rear end of the counter as the latter is about to leave the feed-rolls as to cleanly skive the rear corner of the counter, which is apt to be slighted when -a straight guide is employed.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although Without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be embodied or all the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim is-- 1. In a counter-skiving machine, the comto successively operate upon the counter, a pair of feeding-rolls adapted to receive the counter from one of said mechanisms, a second pair of feeding-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to the other mechanism, a pair of intermediate feeding-rolls, and means to throw said intermediate rolls into and out of operation.
2. In a couuter-skiving machine, the combination of a pair of feed-rolls adapted to ad,- vance the counter, and means controlled by the advancing end of the counter after said end has passed from between the rolls, for separating said rolls.
3. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a counter-skiving mechanism, a pair of normally-operative feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to said mechanism, and means actuated by the presence of a counter in said mechanism for separating said rolls.
4. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a counter-skiving mechanism including a knife and a pair of separable feedrolls adapted to feed the counter against said knife, a pair of separable feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to the first said feedrolls, and means actuated by the separation of the first said rolls for separating the second said rolls..
5. In a counter-skiving machine, the com binationof a counter-skiving mechanism includin g a knife and a pair of feed-rolls adapted to force the counter against said knife, a movable bearing journaling one of said rolls, a pair of feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to the first said rolls and consisting of a driven roll and a resser-roll, the latter journaled in a movable bearing, and a lever interposed between the said movable bearings and adapted to cause the separation of the second said feed-rolls when the first said feedrolls are separated.
6. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a counter-skiving mechanism including a knife and a pair of separable feedrolls, a second pair of separable feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to the first said rolls, mechanism interposed between the first said rolls and the second said rolls, whereby the separation of the former causes the separation of the latter, and means for automatically throwing said interposed mechanism out of action while the first said rolls are still separated, and thereby permitting the return of the first. said rolls to operative relation. 8. In a counter-skiving machine, the com-- bination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including means for retarding one portion of the counter and simultaneously advancing another portion thereof.
9. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including feed-rolls adapted to grasp and advance one edge of the counter, and a friction-producing device located in substantial alinement with said rolls and adapted to retard an adjacent portion of the counter.
10. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including a pair of feed-rolls adapted to grasp and advance one edge of the counter, a loosely-journaled roll adapted to press against the counter at a point laterally adjacent to said feed-rolls, and a removable stop adapted when in place to prevent the rotation of said loosely-journaled roll.
11. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including a pair of feed-rolls adapted to grasp and advance one edge of the counter, a friction-producing member adapted to press against-the counter at a point lat erally adjacent to the feed-rolls, and means to move said member into and out of operative position.

In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including a pair of feed -rolls adapted to grasp and advance one edge of the counter, a loosely-mounted roll adapted to press against the counter at a point laterally adjacent to one of said feed-rolls, and a friction-producing device operating between the last said roll and the loosely-mounted roll,
and movable into and out of position to engage the counter.
13. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, and mechanism to feed the counter against said knife, said mechanism including a pair of feed-rolls adapted to grasp and advance one edge of the counter, a pair of loosely-mounted rolls adapt ed to press against the counter at a point laterally adjacent to said feed-rolls, a frictionproducing device operating between one of said feed-rollsand the corresponding'looselymounted roll and movable into and out of position to engage the counter, and a removable stop adapted when in place to prevent the rotation of the opposed loosely-mounted roll.
14. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, means to simultaneously exert a feeding and retarding action on diiferent portions of the counter, and a guide for the edge of the counter.
15. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, a guide for the edge of the counter, a retarding device adapted to engage and retard the counter, and feed-rolls for feeding the counter, located between said retarding device and said guide.
16. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving-knife, a pair of feed-rolls to feed the counter against said knife, a guide for the curved edge of the counter, and means to hold said edge of the counter against the guide and to cause said counter to pursue a curved path, in passing between said rolls and against the knife, the said guide having its inner end curved inwardly toward the rolls, as set forth.
17. In a counter-skiving machine, the com bination of a skiving mechanism, including a skiving-knife, means to feed the counter against said knife, an ejector or kicker adapted to eject the counter from the mechanism, and means to bring said ejector into operation as the counter becomes released from said feeding means.
18. In a counter-skiving machine, the com= bination of a skiving mechanism, a reciprocatory kicker adapted to eject the counter from said mechanism, and means causing said counter to pursue a curved path around said kicker.
19. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving mechanism, a reciprocatory kicker adapted to eject the counter from said mechanism, and means controllable by the counter for actuating said kicker.
20. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving mechanism including a pair of rolls adapted to feed the counter, one of said rolls being movable toward and from the other and having a driving extension or trunnion, a pivotal segment adapted to be oscillated by said driving extension when the feed-rolls are separated by a counter, and released when the counter passes from between the rolls, a spring adapted to return said seg ment upon its release, and a kicker attached to said segment and adapted to eject the counter from the skiving mechanism.
21. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiving mechanism including a skiving-knife, a pair of separable feed-rolls adapted to force the counter against said knife, a second pair of separable feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to said skiving mechanism, a connection between the first said feed-rolls and the second said feedrolls, whereby the separation of the former causes the separation of the latter, and a kicker adapted to eject the skived counter from said mechanism and having a driving member included in said connection.
22. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skivin g mechanism, means causing the counter to pursue a path curved in' the .plane of the counter, in passing through said mechanism, and an abutment or guide adapted to engage and guide the counter as it leaves said skiving mechanism.
23. In a counter-skiving machine, the comhination of a skiving mechanism, means causing the counter to pursue a path curved in the plane of the counter in passing through said mechanism, and guides for engaging both the curved and straight edges of the counter as it passes through said mechanism.
24. In acounter-skiving machine, the combination of askiving mechanism, means causing the counter to pursue a path curved in the plane of the counter in passing through said mechanism, guides for engaging both the curved and straight edges of the counter as it passes through said mechanism, and means to adjust the straight-edge guide laterally, ,or parallel to the plane of the counter.
25. In a counterskiving machine, the combination of two skiving mechanisms adapted to operate successively on the counter, and means to adjust one of said mechanisms augularly with respect to the other, in parallel relation to the path of the counter.
26. In a counter-skiving machine, the combination of a skiver adapted to skive one edge of the counter, a second skiver adapted to skive another edge of the counter, mechanism for advancing the counter from the first skiver to the second skiver, and means for adjusting the second skiver angularly with respect to the said mechanism, in parallel relation to the path of the counter.
27. In a counter-skiving machine, the coinbin ation of a skiving mechanism including a knife and feeding means to force the counter against said knife, a pair of feed-rolls adapted to introduce the counter to said skiving mechanism, and provisions for adjusting said skiving mechanism with respect to said feedrolls angularly, in parallel relation to the path of the counter.
28. In a counter-skiving machine, the com= bination of a skiving mechanism, a feeding device adapted to introduce the counter to said mechanism, provisions for adjusting the skiving mechanism angularly with respect to the feeding device in the plane of the coun= ter, and means controllable by the presence of a counter in the skiving mechanism for throwing the feeding device into and out of operative condition, said means including a compensating connection between the skiv= ing mechanism and the feeding device.
