PATENT PHILIP PFEIL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOVEPlPE-ELBOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,311, dated July 10, 1900.
Application filed June 14,1897- To all whom, it may concern."
Be it known that I, PHILIP PFEIL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Elbows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact dcscription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in stovepipe-elbows; and it consists in the novel construction of elbow more particularly set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim. v
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the completed elbow. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with a part broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view of the two sections nested together. Fig. 4 is a section on line 00 as of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a similar section of a modified form of coupling device.
One object of my invention is to construct a Stovepipe-elbow in longitudinal sections, whereby in the shipping of the elbow the sections can be conveniently nested, thus taking up a minimum amount of room and enabling the shipper to pack a maximum nu mber of elbows within a given space.
A further object is to provide the sections with suitable means for coupling them together when occasion arises to connect the elbow to an ordinary stovepipe.
In detail the invention may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the longitudinal sections of the elbow, and 1 the other section or half, it being understood that the elbow is split or the sections separable along a medial longitudinal plane passing through the inner and outer curves of the peripheral surface of the elbow. Disposed along the inner and outer curved edges of the section 1 is a continuous oifset 2, from which is struck up a flange 3, each flange being provided with a series of fingers t at suitable distances apart. Disposed along the inner and outer curved edges of the section 1 is a continuous U-shaped recess or groove 5, formed by first bending the edge of the metal back on itself and then subsequently forming the U, as shown, the said groove be in g disposed adjacent to the outer peripheral surface of the section 1 and being on the outside of the elbow when completed. The base Serial No. 640,674. (No model.)
of each groove is provided with a series of openings 6, through which when the sections are coupled the fingers 4 are adapted to be passed the said fingers being subsequently bent back against the pipe, thus firmly coupling the sections together. The inner surface of the offset 2 serves as a ledge against which the free edge of the section 1 is adapted to rest, the parts in such relation forming a smoke-tight joint.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly-modified form of coupling. 10 represents the section corresponding to section 1 and 10 to section 1, the latter, 10, having struck up therefrom a series of tongues 11, leaving each an opening 1 2,which opening is overlapped by the metal of the section 10, the latter having formed a series of openings l3,throngh which the tongues 11 are passed and then subsequently bent against the metal of the said section 10.
It is apparent that in the shipping of the elbows several sections can be nested,asil1ustrated in Fig. 3, (where two are shown ready for packing,) convenient packages being formed by a dozen or so packed and properly nested.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- A Stovepipe-elbow consisting of two sections and divided on the plane in which are located the centers of all the cross-sections of the pipe, the edges of one section 1, forming an outwardly-radial offset 2, and being then bent tangentially forward beyond such oifset and forming fingers or tongues at, the edges of the opposite section 1 being bent rearwardly upon the outside of the said section and then in a return-bend forming a U-shaped groove upon the exterior of the section, having its base located behind the edge of the section, and provided with openings 6 to receive the tongues 4 when the sections are assembled, the edges of the section 1 resting directly against the outwardly-radial offsets 2 of the section 1, and thus forming a smooth interior smoke-tight joint, the tongues being bent back against the body of the pipe, substantially as set forth. p
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP PFEIL.
